2. In Genesis 5 we read about the family tree from Adam to Noah
In Genesis 5 we read about the family tree from Adam to Noah. The people at that time became very old. In the last verse of chapter 5 we read: After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Three sons.
Genesis 6:1-7 speaks about how wicked the people on earth
became. And God regretted that He had made humans and His heart was deeply troubled (v. 6). God decided to wipe out all humans and animals (v. 7), but found one righteous person:
Noah (v. 8).

3. Noah and the flood Genesis 6:9 – 8:22
God speaks to Noah about His plan to put an end to all people (6:13) and instructs Noah in detail to build a rescue boat, called an ark, for Noah and his family. The boat will save them through the worldwide flood that God caused on the earth.

God is speaking to Noah in Genesis 6:17-18: I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark (large boat), you and your (three) sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

5. God instructs Noah to make the boat large so that also from each animal one pair (male and female) could enter the boat, to be saved as well. From the “clean” animals 7 pairs should be taken on the boat (see 7:2).

6. Then in chapter 9:1-17 we see the covenant with Noah,
including the rainbow in the sky as a sign of God’s
promise to never destroy life on earth by a flood.
Chapter 10 describes all people groups that were born from
Noah’s family, spread out over the earth after the flood (v. 32).

7. Tower of Babel
In chapter 11 we see that people became disobedient to God’s command to spread over the earth. In verse 4 we see that they started to build a city and tower that reaches to the heavens. Their goal was to make a name for themselves, instead of for the glory of God, and stay there, instead of spreading over the earth.
The Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel (1525 – 1569) painted three paintings of the Tower of Babel. One of them can be seen in
Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
God confused their language, so that they were forced to stop the building project. Then they got many languages and spread over the whole earth.
