Seven Monkeys This activity works on the principle that different students learn in different ways (V, A, K etc). This will enable you to answer your exam questions in the second half of the lesson.

What you will need for 7 monkeys
An exam question A copy for each pupil of a model answer for the given exam question A mark scheme (a copy for each pupil is good, but can be shown on ppt) A card sort (is optional if time is of the essence) but you will need a mixed up sequence of the key parts of the answer for pupils to sequence Suitable grade boundaries PLEASE SEE THE EXAMPLE OF A 7 MONKEYS ON THE NEXT SLIDES

Q) Explain the processes of convection in a liquid or gas (10 marks)
Whenever a gas or liquid is heated, the particles of the fluid gain thermal (heat) energy. As the particles gain energy they start to move faster and this means their kinetic (movement) energy increases. This causes the particles to spread out and the gas (or liquid) which has been heated expands. The hot gas becomes less dense and will rise. However, when the particles move away from the heat source they start to lose energy. This makes the particles slow down (less kinetic energy) and the gas becomes denser. The more dense particles sink and this process repeats creating a convection current.

Mark Scheme Heating cause particles to gain (thermal) energy (1) This thermal energy provides particles with more kinetic energy (1) The faster the particles are moving the more spread out they become (1) By spreading out, the heated volume of gas becomes less dense than the gas around it (1) This causes the hot, spread out gas to rise. (1) As the gas travels away from the heat source, the particles lose thermal energy (1); The particles slow down and become more dense (1) The denser gas will fall (1) This cycle will repeat (1) setting up a convection current (1)
