3. 1) Equip yourself with a 30cm ruler and sharp pencil.
5 minutes
1) Equip yourself with a 30cm ruler and sharp pencil.
2) Collect your black and white photograph.
3) Draw a grid measuring 2cm squares over your photograph

4. 4) Now take a sheet of A4 white cartridge paper.
5) Draw exactly the same size grid in the centre of the paper BUT do it with light lines.
6) Write A,B,C,D… across the top and 1,2,3,4… down the side

5. 7) Put your photograph side by side with the grid and begin to look across from one to the other and using the grid squares one at a time, draw what you can see in lines only.

6. 60 minutes
Follow the instructions that you have just been guided through to start to draw your self-portrait accurately using gridding.

7. 10 minutes
Once you have drawn your portrait out accurately in LINE you must then rub out all the grid lines…be careful not to rub away your drawing though!
Now watch a teacher demonstration to learn about adding tone effectively.

8. 120 minutes
Begin to add tone to your portrait, a little at a time, to build up the variations and to create a sense of three-dimensions.
You will also need to use your eraser to take away some tones to reveal highlights.

9. Ensure that your tonal self-portrait is complete by the next lesson.

10. 5 minutes
Turn the back of your book and write ‘tonal self-portrait’ onto your ‘Self-reflection, consolidation, evaluation and target setting’ sheet. Now complete each section thinking about the success of your drawing and what difficulties you encountered and how you overcame them.
