General Chemistry Chemistry is concerned with all day-to-day things you touch, see and smell. Chemicals: may occurs naturally like metals and oils. may be produced by living organisms (animals or plants). may be produced by synthetic pathways. Chemistry is one of the most important basic sciences for all Pharmacy students. Chemistry lab images are usually used in the media to refer to the Faculty of Pharmacy.

6 General Chemistry

7 General Chemistry Course
During your life in the Faculty of Pharmacy, you will have the chance to learn about several branches of chemistry including: Inorganic Chemistry. Physical Chemistry. Analytical Chemistry. Organic Chemistry. Medicinal Chemistry. Phytochemistry. Biochemistry. General Chemistry Course

8 Our course is entitled: General Chemistry (PC101).
It is divided into 2 main branches: Inorganic Chemistry … by Dr. Mohamed Abd El-Ghaffar Physical Chemistry … by Dr. Samar Saad Overall aims of General Chemistry course: Learn the basic principles of qualitative inorganic chemistry including unit conversion, types of reaction, chemical equilibrium, dissociation constant and pH. Learn the basic principles of physical chemistry including the rate of reaction, kinetics of chemical reactions, thermochemistry and thermodynamics.

10 Physical Chemistry

11 Physical Chemistry Introduction

12 What is Physical Chemistry?
Chemistry: It is the science dealing with the transfer of matter. It is concerned with chemical reactions Example: NaOH + HCl  NaCl + H2O … complete transfer of matter Physics: It is the science dealing with the transfer of energy. It is concerned with physical phenomena Example: transfer of electrical energy to thermal energy. Physical Chemistry: It is a branch of chemistry concerned with the application of the principles and theories of physics to the study of chemical systems. In other words, it joins between chemical reaction and physical phenomena.

13 This branch is devoted to the study of the following topics:
Physical Chemistry This branch is devoted to the study of the following topics: Reaction rates and chemical kinetics. Thermodynamics and thermochemisty. Electrochemistry. Photochemistry. Solutions and their properties. Surface science (e.g. adsorption). Polymers. ………………….. and others. These physical chemistry topics have unlimited number of applications in the pharmaceutical field.

14 What is the Importance of Physical Chemistry in Pharmacy?
The physical chemistry course is an obligatory course in almost all pharmacy programs due to the wide variety of its pharmaceutical applications. Examples of the pharmaceutical applications of physical chemistry Studying the stability of drugs and calculation of their expiratory date and applying that to achieve proper preservation and storage of pharmaceutical preparations.

15 Physical Chemistry Examples of the pharmaceutical applications of physical chemistry [continued] Studying the process involved in large-scale production in pharmaceutical industry such as evaporation, distillation, drying, freeze-drying, mixing …etc. Studying the physicochemical properties of drugs, which are key parameters in the drug absorption in the human body and related bioavailability studies. Studying of different drug actions like adsorption, crystallization, encapsulation, partitioning, as well as drug- receptor interaction.

16 Physical Chemistry Examples of the pharmaceutical applications of physical chemistry [continued] Studying drug formulations and drug-delivery systems and applying physicochemical principles to improve pharmaceutical dosage forms. Studying the properties of solutions, suspensions and emulsions which have significant importance in the pharmaceutical industry. Understanding the physicochemical principles of the methods used for pharmaceutical analysis in quality control laboratories. ……. and others
