1
What is it?
2
Science the use of scientific inquiry to form TESTABLE explanations and make predictions about studying the natural world
3
Scientific Inquiry a process for investigating the natural world.
Nature follows a set of rules Scientist ask questions and make observations to learn about those rules
4
3 Major Categories of Science
all about living things investigates Earth and space deals with matter and energy
5
Science Changes can change as we learn more about the world around us
6
SCIENCE CHANGES Current model Early 1900’s Discuss how the atom was first thought to have the electron embedded within the atom. With more research Rutherford created a model where the nucleus was at the center and the electron orbited around it. The current model, the electron cloud model consists of the nucleus and the space where the electrons are rapidly moving. Model of the atom changes over time as scientist pull together evidence from many investigations
7
Limitations of Science
some questions can not be answered by science because they are not scientifically testable
8
Science Can’t answer questions about value “Which of these
flowers is prettier?” “Which is more valuable, one ounce of gold or one ounce of steel? (our culture determines the value)
9
Science can’t answer questions of morality
Ex: “Is it right or wrong to do stem cell research?”
10
Science can’t answer questions about the supernatural
Ex: “Do ghosts or aliens really exist?”
