MATTHEW 26:20-22 “20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. 21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?”

MATTHEW 26:23-24 “23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.”

MATTHEW 26:25 “25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.”

INTRODUCTION GOOD MORNING. We thank God…

INTRODUCTION Please repeat after me: “Be ye doers of the word – and not hearers only – deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

INTRODUCTION We are so very thankful for this congregation…

INTRODUCTION VISITORS: you are our welcomed and honored guest…We are thankful and excited that you all are here and under the sound of our voice.

LORD, IS IT I? “One of you shall betray me… they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?” (Matthew 26:21-22). But instead, each searched his own heart, saying, "Lord, is it I?"

LORD, IS IT I? "But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup" (1 Corinthians 11:28).

LORD, IS IT I? “Churchanity” is the means whereby a great portion of the world is being deceived - namely, a religious system that in the outward appears Christian, but is devoid of Christ's truth, presence and power.

LORD, IS IT I? “Churchanity” refers to people who have set aside the simple teachings of Christ and the apostles and substituted their own commandments and traditions in their relationship with God.

LORD, IS IT I? Being a Christian is NOT something to wear on Sunday and take off on Monday; it is a daily holy walk with God.

LORD, IS IT I? Therefore, in this sermon we will help you ask yourself some soul-searching questions. As you meditate on each question, please be honest with yourself.

LORD, IS IT I? “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13).

LORD, IS IT I? Now, in the sight of Him who has "his eyes like unto a flame of fire" (Revelation 2:18), may each of us ask and answer the question: "Lord, is it I?"

QUESTIONS FOR SELF-EXAMINATION
(1) Do I occasionally violate this passage: "3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite" (Matthew 7:3-5)?

(2) Knowing that Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35), do you find more joy in receiving than in giving? Have you given yourself wholly to the Lord (2 Corinthians 8:5)?

(3a) Am I putting my trust in the Lord or am I going beyond the borders of thoughtful concern and engaging in useless worry? You “worry” when you hold mental pictures of things you don’t want to happen!

QUESTIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS
(3b) The Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5). In other words, DON’T WORRY!

(3c) Remember, the child of God knows, “That all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). So again, DON’T WORRY!

(4) Is my word as good as my bond? If so, do I, "Provide things honest in the sight of all men" (Romans 12:17)?

(5) Do I daily manifested true Christian friendliness? The wise man wrote: “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).

(6) Do I dress in modest apparel? Am I keeping this command?... "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety" (1 Timothy 2:9).

(7a) What kind of literature did I read, or TV program did I watch and listen to last week? Would it build up a Christian or would it destroy one’s spirituality?

(7b) The Bible says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7). A person’s thinking is affected by his reading and hearing!

(8) Am I guilty of violating this command?...“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess" (Eph. 5:18). Have I dimmed my light of influence by participating with my worldly friends and relatives in social alcoholic drinking (Matthew 5:16)?

(9) Have I encouraged my children to become gamblers by playing for stakes at the card table or purchasing the lottery tickets or pulling the one-armed bandit at the casino? The Bible says, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right…" (Ephesians 6:1).

(10) Did I engage in any questionable entertainment this past weekend? Remember, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this… to keep oneself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27).

(11a) Would I want Christ to come and find me in every place I went for entertainment last month? Beer taverns? Honkey-tonks? Night clubs?

(11b) Was my speech and conduct last week in my own home compatible with the Christian faith? Jesus said, "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come" (Matthew 24:42).

(12a) Do I knowingly use idle talk or slang that takes the name of the Lord in vain? (Oh My God…Good Grief). God’s people of old were told, "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" (Exodus 20:7).

(12b) Jesus tells us all, “That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).

(13) Do I tell dirty jokes? Or do I laugh when someone else tells them? Believers in Jesus are told to, "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt" (Colossians 4:6).

(14) Am I humble? Or do I think too highly of myself? Paul wrote, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith" (Rom. 12:3).

(15) Am I keeping this command?... "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

(16) Did I forgive my brother who trespassed against me? Remember, “If ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:15).

(17) Do I return evil for evil?... even though I know God says, "Recompense to no man evil for evil" (Romans 12:17)?

(18) Did I turn against a friend and return evil for good? “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10).

(19) Did I refuse to help a needy neighbor when I could have helped? The second great command says, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:39).

(20) Have I acted hypocritically by talking one way in the presence of one friend and by talking a different way in the presence of another friend? The Christian should NOT be, "Double-tongued" (1 Timothy 3:8).

(21) Am I guilty of murder because of hatred in my heart toward someone? John wrote, "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer" (1 John 3:15).

(22) Have my attitudes toward those of the opposite sex been Christian? Jesus says, “That every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).

(23) Did I say an unkind thing about anybody this past week? The Holy Spirit commands: "Speak not evil one of another, brethren” (James 4:11).

(24) Am I spreading gossip or lending my ears to gossip and thus encouraging its circulation? "Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people" (Leviticus 19:16).

(25) Did I become angry yesterday? If so, did I let the sun go down upon my wrath? "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath" (Ephesians 4:26).

(26) At any time during the past week did I violate the Golden Rule? ''All things therefore whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do ye also unto them: for this is the law and the prophets" (Matthew 7:12).

(27) Would I want my child to do everything I did yesterday? "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).

(28) Have I, through jealousy, mistreated my spiritual or physical brethren? ''Love worketh no ill" (Romans 13:10). "For jealousy is the rage of a man" (Proverbs 6:34).

(29) Children: Have I honored my parents that my days may be long? "Honor thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise), that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" (Ephesians 6:2-3).

(30) Wives: Have I looked upon my husband just as a "bread ticket" instead of one to work with and help? "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him" (Genesis 2:18). A wife must help, NOT hinder.

(31) Husbands: Have I looked upon my wife just as someone to keep house for me? "Husbands love your wives, and be not bitter against them" (Colossians 3:19).

(32) Wives: Did I so arrange my duties and guide my house that I could attend Bible study and worship on Sunday? Or did I wait until Sunday morning to do those things which could have been done previously and thus neglected to put spiritual things first? (1 Timothy 5:14).

(33) Have I attended worship services faithfully? Or have I forsaken the assembling of the saints? God says, "Not forsaking our own assembling together" (Hebrews 10:25).

(34) Have I used insincere words to gain selfish ends? Have the words of my mouth been contrary to the sentiments of my heart? "With their tongues they have used deceit" (Romans 3:13).

(35) Did I lie to put over a business transaction? "Lie not one to another" (Colossians 3:9).

(36) Have I placed the church above every other institution and thing in the world? Or am I guilty of violating this command: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness" (Matthew 6:33).

(37) Do I stay so busy or stay out so late on Saturday night that I am not in physical condition (to tired) to worship God "in spirit and truth" with the saints on Sunday (John 4:24)?

(38) Do I purpose in my heart each week what I should give to the Lord on the Lord's day? "Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7).

(39) Did I refuse to defend the church when it was attacked by unbelievers? Paul said, “I am set for the defence of the gospel" (Philippians 1:16).

(40) Have I contended earnestly for the faith? Or have I taken the attitude that it makes no difference? “It was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3).

(41) Do I invite someone to worship with us each week? “And he that winneth souls is wise" (Proverbs 11:30).

(42) Do I take my child to worship and Bible class, or do I send him? Have I made a sincere effort to bring up my child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6).

(43) Have I been more interested in my own amusements and in social affairs than in the work of the church? "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36).

(44) Did I read and study my Bible yesterday? Paul commanded Timothy, "Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching" (1 Timothy 4:13).

(45) Did I pray yesterday? "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5: 17).

(46) Did I visit the sick? This will come up at the judgment (Matthew 25:36-46).

(47) Did I make an effort yesterday to restore the fallen? "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness" (Galatians 6:1).

(48) Do I look for opportunities to preach the gospel to lost souls? Jesus commanded, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

(49) Am I a lover of the world rather than a lover of God? “Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God" (2 Timothy 3:4). Lord, is it I?

(50) Have I been irreverent around the Lord's table? "Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord" (1 Corinthians 11:27).

(51) Did I yesterday, in an effort to impress wicked people, act meaner than I really am? Peter did, but later repented (Matthew 26:69-75). Do I need to repent of this sin?

(52) Am I cooperative? Can I work well with others? Do I even want to work with others? "As workers together with him" (2 Corinthians 6:1).

(53) Am I growing spiritually as a child of God? “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2).

(54) Did I yesterday count all things loss to gain Christ? Paul said, “What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ" (Philippians 3:7).

(55) Am I guilty of saying and not doing? In speaking of the Pharisees, Jesus said, "They say, and do not" (Matthew 23:3).

(56) Have I become weary in well-doing? "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not" (Gal. 6:9).

(57) Am I selfish and self-centered? "Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others" (Philippians 2:4).

(58) Am I guilty of avenging myself? “Avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine. I will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19).

(59) Has my conduct hindered the gospel of Christ? Paul said, “We suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ (1 Corinthians 9:12).

(60) Am I earnestly striving this day to open my life more completely to God and his way of life? Am I? "Lord, is it I?"

CONCLUSION Loved ones, having said all of that, please remember that the hope of salvation is based on God’s grace/faith system, NOT our sinless legal performance. The death and resurrection of Jesus assure us of that hope as we look forward to the Glory of God in Heaven.

CONCLUSION Focusing on the pure example of Jesus helps to prepare us to be ready to meet Him. No one who has learned to hope Biblically will ever be overcome by disappointment, but will be filled with patience and encouragement.

CONCLUSION This hope of heaven is for those who by faith in Christ, repentance of sin, confession of Christ’s Lordship, and burial in water baptism, obey the gospel of hope to become a Christian.

CONCLUSION Christian, if you are living unfaithfully to Christ, repent and return to the Lord to have this blessed hope.

INVITATION For our invitation this morning, we are NOT going to ask you to come forward. In fact, we are going to sing the invitation song while sitting in our seats.

INVITATION However, if you have honestly examined yourself and you are humble enough to repent of at least one of the questions of this sermon, we will ask you to stand up right where you are before the song ends.
