Metadata Training Development- it’s not a sequential process

Audience Analysis- Formal
Via survey/questionnaire or telephone interview with workshop host or participants. Gain insight on participants Organizational role: management, gis analyst, librarian, field scientist, etc. Metadata experience Variable levels of expertise Allows pre-workshop preparation Software Establish link with audience- making it personal Special needs

Audience Analysis- Informal
Implement “ice-breaker” to gain insight during introduction portion of workshop Working in pairs, gain information to introduce your partner and discuss your major metadata issues. During introduction- the partner introduces the other participant and the participant’s metadata issue.

Workshop Level: Metadata Experience
Introductory Workshop- No experience Read metadata Familiar with CSDGM Intermediate Workshop Uses metadata for data management Writes/creates metadata Uses MP Advanced Workshop Produces and manages metadata Custom Workshop Metadata implementation as part of data management

Content Through survey or discussions with training host determine content for the workshop Homogeneous group?, fairly simple… but… Mixed crowd? Schedule “big picture” content early, allowing managerial types to attend after morning break. Pre-workshop seminar for managers. Immediately preceding or Sufficient lead time to recruit trainees Wrap-up session with trainees to discuss implementation issues.

Content- “On Target Training” Exercise
Time Frame – 5 minutes to compose your thoughts minutes for discussion of sample concepts. Using color coded index cards share a metadata concept that you feel meets the following categories for a metadata creator workshop. There are no wrong answers. Must Know- yellow card Should Know- green card Could Know- blue card
