Goal Setting terms Goal is something you work toward and hope to achieve. Short term goal is one that can be reached in a short period of time… sometimes they are steps in a plan to achieve a long term goal Long term goal is one that you plan to reach over an extended period of time… sometimes taking months or even years to accomplish

Delayed gratification – putting off an immediate pleasure for a greater reward later
Self-esteem is the way you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself. Success is the achievement of a goal – not always winning - sometimes you can lose a contest, but succeed by achieving your goal. A resource is something that can help you reach your goal. A mentor is a person who can give you good advise and help you use the resources available to you.

Smart goals 1. identify the goal
2. how will you know when it is accomplished? 3. what are at least 3 steps that will help me accomplish this goal? 4. why is this goal worth my time and effort? 5. when does it start? when does it end? what do I do today, tomorrow and in the coming weeks?

Changing your goals Goals sometimes change when interests change. Ask yourself… Does the idea of reaching my goal make me happy? Am I doing well at what I do? Am I upholding my values through my goals? Is there something else I would rather be doing?

“Imagine that your parents have a goal for you to become a doctor
“Imagine that your parents have a goal for you to become a doctor. You have no interest in the profession, you don’t enjoy science or math, and you have no idea what it takes to become a doctor.” Why is it unlikely that you will ever achieve this goal? Can you think of another example of why you would change a goal?
