Using 690’s for Booklists in Horizon
Veronica Smith Automation Coordinator Westminster Public Library CHUG Meeting April 8, 2005
2
Why use the 690 field? For library staff who are not catalogers.
Distributed workload for public services staff. Public services staff who know their collections. can add titles that they deem useful. Easily create dynamic lists in HIP. The list is “newly” created each time a patron performs a search. Items that were purged will no longer show up on the list…..no staff intervention required!
3
Creating a Subject Heading
Create an authority for the 690 (local subject heading) Begin with a standard prefix (WPL) Groups all 690’s together for easy retrieval by public services staff. Staff know these are used for booklist creation.
4
Setting up the 690 Role In Horizon Setup the Privileges tab:
Administration > Security Menu > Role Manager Setup the Privileges tab: Provide Authority and MARC editor access. Setup the Cataloging tab: Permissions for Auth records. Permissions for Bib records.

Creating the lists Staff can now add the appropriate 690 tag to whatever titles they choose. Create a link in HIP: Setup a category/sub-category that searches the specific 690 tag. Add that category/sub-category to a page.
