Serious or light-hearted and fun Favorably or unfavorably Objectively (without bias) or subjectively (with opinions) One piece of writing may approach a topic with humor whereas another text may present the same topic quite seriously.

2 Treatment Example: A student may write an editorial to his school newspaper suggesting changes to the lunch menu. He may compare the beef to an old shoe and the baked potato to a cold baseball. Treatment Unfavorable Lighthearted Subjective

3 Treatment A parent who is a nutritionist may write to the local newspaper with a completely different treatment. She believes that the food served at school is high in trans-fats, sodium, and preservatives that are harming the kids and should be replaced with healthier options. Treatment Unfavorable Serious Subjective

4 Scope The information the writing covers Two kinds
Broad: when the topic covers a wide range of information or a long period of time. Example: your Social Studies textbook Covers wide range of topics over many years Limited: when the topic talks about just a few ideas or a short period of time. Example: the Eleanor Roosevelt biography Covers only the years she worked with the United Nations

5 Scope A man writes a letter to his local newspaper stating that video games cause kids to be lazy because he has observed his son refuse to go outside to play because he is playing a video game. Another man writes to the newspaper stating that video games can be helpful to children because it helps their hand-eye coordination. He cites several recent studies done by researchers at universities around the country. Which has a broad scope? Why?
