Can you describe what each of these tools does?
UNITE . MINUS FRONT INTERSECT Can you describe what each of these tools does?

Lesson Objectives To understand how to use the pen tool to draw original shapes To understand how to edit the nodes on a shape in order to create a more accurate image Lesson Outcomes All students will be able to create a dinosaur using the pen tool Most students will edit effectively using the white arrow and alter the corners Some students will produce a realistic vector image

The Pen Tool The pen tool is a useful tool on Illustrator because it allows create original shapes. Whenever you click your mouse you create a corner, which creates a node. These are blue squares which pin the shape to the canvas.

Tip: Colouring a shape When you use the Pen tool you need to ensure that you join your dots up, and click the first node you put down. Otherwise, illustrator presumes that you want to join them up anyway, and you may end up with a shape you don’t want.

Task 1: Draw a dinosaur Draw the basic shape of a dinosaur. Try and use a few nodes as possible! DO NOT WORRY if it doesn’t look much like one at the minute - it’s not an art lesson! Remember to join your shape up.

Tweak your dinosaur White arrow Click to select a node
Click it again and drag it into position.

Tweak your dinosaur I’ve added lots of extra nodes down his back And then used the white arrow to pull them into spikes You might find that you want to delete a node because you don’t need it, or you might want to add extra notes to give you more freedom. Click and hold on the Pen tool and you get more options to add or delete the nodes.

Adding extra nodes to the face gives it more of a dinosaur shape
The hand is more claw like The tail has a dangerous spike on it.

Curve or corner? Your dinosaur will still look a bit rigid because its made with straight lines. All of the nodes we have drawn we can now decide if we want them to be curves or corners. I want my dinosaur to have a fat belly rather than a pointy one. When I click on the node on his belly I get more options at the top of the screen You can convert the node into a corner and it will curve it.

Editing the handles Two handles appear on the corner which allow you to edit the shape. The longer the wider the curve The shorter the narrower the curve

Try for yourself Choose one of these animals to try and recreate!

On your work book Snip your dinosaur or your farm animal onto your work book. Using your image explain how you used the following The pen tool Curved corners The white arrow Level 4 or above? Justify why you chose to use that tool to create the effect you wanted.
