2 What happens when fresh & salt water meet?

3

4 Estuary* When salt water and fresh water mix in a river, delta, or other source. 2 Types: - Mangrove Forest - Salt Marsh

5 MAYBE A FRESH WATER CROCODILE WANTS A SALTY MEAL IN THE SEA!

6 Maybe it wants a shark dinner!

7 Double the plant life!!!!!

8 Birds always have something to eat.

9 Birds have plenty of nesting sites too!

10 Birds have plenty of nesting sites too!

11 Birds have plenty of nesting sites too!

12 Estuaries have 2x life because 2 ecosystems are colliding!

13 Estuaries have 2x life because 2 ecosystems are colliding!

14 Estuaries: 2 X the breeding & feeding!

15 Look how lush & fertile an estuary looks from space!

16 2 types of estuary: SALT MARSH Atlantic Carolina coasts Stinky cord grass Absorbs tons of moisture MANGROVES Louisiana & gulf Hurricane proof trees Absorbs tons of moisture Great breeding grounds--nursery

19 In both pictures, the water is above the ground for some reason, and we know it is on top of dirt. Why isn’t the water sinking if the dirt is permeable?

20 Permeable vs. Impermeable
Great breeding grounds--nursery

21 Permeable vs. Impermeable

24 So how does permeable layers affect your groundwater?

25 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
Water is an interesting, very unique, and required material in your every day life. But what makes water so great, you ask?

26 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
It DISSOLVES most stuff…eventually —UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

27 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
It DISSOLVES most stuff…eventually —UNIVERSAL SOLVENT It occurs NATURALLY in ALL 3 STATES of matter. SOLID liquid gas

28 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
It DISSOLVES most stuff…eventually —UNIVERSAL SOLVENT It occurs NATURALLY in ALL 3 STATES of matter. It’s NECESSARY for LIFE!

29 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
It’s NECESSARY for LIFE!

30 The Strange and Wonderful Mr. Water
It DISSOLVES most stuff…eventually —UNIVERSAL SOLVENT It occurs NATURALLY in ALL 3 STATES of matter. It’s NECESSARY for LIFE! Its SOLID form (ice) is LESS DENSE than its LIQUID form. Why? Yeah I know that, but why?

31 Short Chemistry Detour
So here’s a standard water molecule H H O Whose molecular formula is H2O

32 Short Chemistry Detour
This same water molecule had a positive side and a negative side. H H O

33 And if you remember anything from 6th or 7th grade… it should be magnets.

34 So, like magnets, and the Earth; water has two poles.

35 Short Chemistry Detour
So based on that knowledge, how is water molecule 1 going to react to water molecule 2? 1 2

36 Short Chemistry Detour
The negative end is going to attract the positive end and vice versa. THEY ACT LIKE TINY MAGNETS. 1 Because of this, we say water has polarity. 2

37 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. ADHESION COHESION Adhesion, from adhere, verb - meaning: ‘stick fast to (a surface or substance).’ Cohesion, containing prefix co, - meaning: ‘together or jointly’

38 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. ADHESION COHESION Water will stick to other stuff and defy gravity. Water will also stick to itself! (polarity)

39 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. ADHESION Water will stick to other stuff and defy gravity. Example? Capillary action in plants!

40 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. COHESION Water will also stick to itself! (polarity) Think people cooperating!

41 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. COHESION Water will also stick to itself! (polarity) Also think, surface tension!

42 Short Chemistry Detour
Now, because water molecules act like tiny magnets, very unique situations occur. Do you even lift? This random bug can balance on water, can you do the same with an ordinary staple?

43 Short Chemistry Detour
So when water freezes, what happens and why does water expand???

44 What happens to your water as it goes through different permeable layers?
Gravel Dirt Sand Which layer would you want your water to go through first? Which one last? Why? Clay

45 Water Filtration Lab Tables = Groups
- Follow directions and complete lab sheet as a group. You will be choosing three materials to filter out our ‘polluted’ water. Place the filtration in any order in your tube so long as the tissue is at the bottom. Your objective is to filter out all ‘pollution’ in the water. Complete beginning of Lab Sheet before beginning to experiment. Spills = You are an honorary custodian tomorrow
