Subaru – Generation 1 and 2 Front Differential
VIP Training Subaru – Generation 1 and 2 Front Differential Service Procedure. Gen 1 years 2010 – 2012 Gen 2 years Current

Subaru Gen 1 and 2 : Remove T-70 torx “Drain” plug as well as “Check” plug from the bottom of diff.

Generation 1 front diff’s use a different style “check” plug, but in a similar location..

Reinstall Torx “Drain” plug when empty, and torque to 51
Reinstall Torx “Drain” plug when empty, and torque to 51.6 ft lbs both Gen 1 and Gen Leave “Check” plug out for now..

Remove the diff fill plug from the right side ( passenger side ) of the differential..

Gen 1 Subaru front diff’s should have a rubber plug with a cap also on the right side of the diff for filling purposes..

The fill plug may be difficult to reach so you may need an Allen Head socket and extension to get easier access on Gen 2 models.

Gen 1 diff’s may look like this from the top side looking down..

Do not attempt to fill the differential from any of the ports on the left ( drivers side ) of the vehicle. These are ALL CVT transmission related ports !!!!

Fill diff with up to 1.5 quarts of diff fluid until gear oil runs out of the “ Check Port” Install the “check plug” when the flow reaches a trickle.

Torque Gen 2 Allen Head check plug to 36.9 ft lbs..

Torque Gen 1 Hex Head “Check Plug” to 26 ft lbs.

Install diff fill plug and torque to 26 ft lbs. 35 Nm

Install the cap back in the fill tube on Gen 1 models.

Wipe or wash down any over flow and you are done !
