4. Scene 1 - Orsino's Castle
We learn a lot about love and Orsino's character: he wants what he wants (Olivia)
Famous lines:
"If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken and so die." -lines 1-3
Shakespeare defines love; it's unwanted/not easily avoided
Orsino is lovesick and unhappy because of it
Hopes more music will stop him from loving (surfeit = overdose)
Connects to EQ "What is the difference between friendship, lust, and love?"

5. Other side of love "O spirit of love, how quick and fresh art thou
That, notwithstanding thy capacity
Receiveth as the sea, naught enters there,
Of what validity and pitch so e’er,
But falls into abatement and low price
Even in a minute! So full of shapes is fancy
That it alone is high fantastical." -1.1 lines 9-15
Overpowering love ("fancy") compared to imagination (that which is "fantastical")
Is love more about imagination or reality of the person who is loved?
Orsino likes the idea of thinking about Olivia more than the reality that she won't love him

6. Scene 2 - The Seacoast
Viola is shipwrecked and is talking with the ship's captain
From their conversation, we can infer that Viola:
Is rich
Pays Captain for calling Sebastian hearty and keeping her disguise a secret
Is hiding something
she mentions needing to keep her identity secret until the right moment
Likes/Is interested in Orsino
asks if he's still a bachelor
Viola asks the Captain to help her disguise herself as a high-singing boy so that she can work for Orsino

7. Scene 3 - Olivia's House
Sir Toby is talking with Maria about Sir Andrew
Sir andrew is supposedly brave, smart, multilingual guy (perfect for Olivia)
Sir Andrew is dumb and slow in reality
Sir Toby is a lighthearted drinker and a partier (parties with Andrew)
Maria is a more practical, witty maid
Sir Toby won't believe anything bad about Sir Andrew
has too much faith in his friend
believes Andrew needs to show off his skills some more

8. Elements of Satire Sarcasm - used to exemplify Andrew's dumbness
Andrew: But it becomes me well enough, does ’t not?
Toby: Excellent. It hangs like flax on a distaff.

Andrew is too thick to understand that Toby basically compared his hair to an old mop
