3 Protection & Support Your skeleton gives your body it’s shape & provides support as you move through the day What bones protect your heart? What bones protect your brain?

4 Storage & Production of Materials
Bones store calcium Your breast bone & thighbone produce red blood cells

5 Bones are living!! Bones are living structures that undergo change throughout your life!

6 Cartilage  Bone Newborns are born with cartilage tissue
Cartilage is a soft & flexible bone tissue As you grow, this cartilage is replaced with bone tissue through ossification Adults have cartilage in their ears, nose, covering ends of bone & to cushion some joints

7 Bones & Joints A place in your body where two or more bones come together is called a joint Ligaments are strong bands that hold bones together at joints Joints allow for movement & protect bones from friction & force

8 Types of Joints: Ball & Socket

9 Hinge: Examples include the elbow & knee
Bend & straighten your arm- notice how your elbow ONLY opens & closes! This makes it a hinge joint!!!

12 Keeping bones healthy A combination of eating well, exercise & avoiding injuries contributes to lifelong bone & joint health

13 Bone & Joint Injuries Fracture- break in bone

14 Sprain- overstretched ligament

15 Dislocation- ends of bones in a joint are forced out of normal position

16 Overuse injuries- caused when an activity is performed too often or too strenuously. Joints will become inflamed & irritated.
