Gleason’s Current Force Application Process
P16665 – Gleason Force Applicator Senior Design Project Team Members Nicholas Cocca Vincent Forrester Adel Yasin Peter Hajosch Joseph Schmitt Project Statement: The hobbing process is a method of generating gears where both workpiece and machine tool rotate simultaneously. The stiffness of the hobber is has a great influence on the quality of the final product. Currently, the device used to test stiffness is: Our project is to address these limitations with the goals of: Limited to force application in one direction Tedious to test Not ergonomically efficient 3 dimensional measurement Quick setup and automated use Sound ergonomic design Solution: Gleason’s Current Force Application Process Final device contains the following features: 4140 pre-hard steel in all areas where a load is being applied Clamping fixture attached to arbor Ball joint located at workpiece Sliding fixture to allow for ease of manipulating position Inclinometer and rotary encoder measure position in axis Hydraulic ram system to apply load Load cell to measure applied load GUI system for ease of use and output measurements Guide: Gary Werth (not pictured) Engineering Requirements: Final Design: GUI System Outputs: Concept Development and Selection: Conclusion and Recommendations for Future Projects: Schmitt Box Pivol Swivet Conclusion: Met all customer and engineering requirements Customer is highly satisfied Considerations for all projects: Use your guide as much as possible, touch base even when things are running smoothly Double and triple check measurements and drawings Work ahead of the academic calendar Buy high quality electronics Considerations for future Gleason Force Applicator projects: Develop testing apparatus to measure dynamic load Sponsors and Acknowledgements Sponsor: Final Design Concept Exploded View Scan the QR code below to learn more about our project! with Mike Walker, Senior Mechanical Project Engineer Acknowledgements: Dr. Rui Liu, KGCOE ME Assistant Professor Rob Kraynik, Jan Maneti, and Craig Piccarreto in the machine shop
