1
Arabidopsis and Agar Depth
Morgan Hiler Hannah Leirmoe Carrie Martin
2
Hypothesis Arabidopsis seeds planted below the surface of the agar will germinate, but will not break the surface.
3
Measurements The Arabidopsis plants were first looked at to see whether or not there were signs of germination (root growth, shoots). If germination occurred below agar, did it break the surface of the agar?

5
Summary of Results Of the seeds planted beneath the agar only two or three broke the surface.
6
Interpretation of Results
The plants below the agar that germinated but did not break through would not have a ready supply of oxygen or sunlight and in their natural habitats and would eventually die. Most of the time, plants under the surface will not break through.
7
Hypothesis Arabidopsis seeds planted below the surface of the agar will germinate, but will not break the surface. Agar depth has negative effects on survival of plants. These results supported our original hypothesis.
8
Modifications The seeds that broke the surface of the agar were not placed in the center of the domes so a better way to cover the seeds uniformly would help this experiment.
