Detection of CMV DNA in aortic tissues by PCR. A, Photograph of ethidium-bromide stained gel. B, Southern blot analysis. DNA samples were extracted from inflammatory aneurysms (lanes 1–6), aortic occlusion with inflammation (lanes 7 and 8), atherosclerotic aneurysms (lanes 9–11), autopsy samples (lanes 12–14), and CMV strain AD169 as a positive control (lane 15). No DNA was added as a negative control (lane 16). HpaII-digested pUC18 was used as a size marker (lane M). Positive signals, 230 bp fragment of IE gene, were detected in lanes 1, 2, 4–8, 10, 11, 13, and 15.
