Report from Graduate Affairs Committee Nov 2007
The committee met Tuesday Nov 20 Two items were discussed 1) A Medical Physics MS Option within the Applied Physics – Internship program The preliminary program put together by Cheng, Lichti and Nair (Fri Nov 16) has 10 courses plus an Internship in a clinical setting. The committee felt that this may be too many courses and raised other questions that we know we will have to deal with – Who will teach the courses? How to support students? etc. This committee supports continued efforts to define a Medical Physics MS option and to develop a plan to implement such a program within the existing Applied Physics MS - Internship structure. We do not support developing a Doctoral level Professional program in Medical Physics until the MS is functioning, and then only if TTUHSC is willing to become a full partner. A standard PhD in Physics with a research project in the medical physics field is always an option for an interested student with the right academic credentials. 2) Modification of the PhD Qualifying procedures Two options to replace the current PQE have been seriously discussed. The committee will outline more fully how each of these modified PhD Qualifying formats would work and plans to submit both options to the faculty at a later date for further discussion and possible action.
