A molecule will be nonpolar if…
All of the terminal atoms (or groups) are the same If all of the terminal atoms (or groups) are symmetrically arranged around the central atom The terminal atoms (or groups) have the same charges Example: CO2 CO2 – no charge on either side (dipole) no attraction, reason it is a gas at room temperature

A molecule will be polar if…
One or more terminal atoms differ from each other The terminal atoms are not symmetrically arranged Polar molecules will have one slightly positive end and one slightly negative end Example H2O NH3

Rules Count the total number of valence electrons in the molecule
Draw the molecule and show all single bonds around the central atom Using lone pairs, complete the octets around the non- central atoms Count the total number of electrons on the molecule Determine if you need to add a double or triple bond Add extra electrons to the central atom
