2 Phonological Awareness
Math All about addition! Your students brought home basic flashcards. Our goal for the end of the year is to add fluently to sums of 5. We will work on basic worksheet style problems along with word and story problems. We will use a variety of strategies such as fingers, counting on, number lines, ten frames, drawing pictures and more to help build our addition skills. Writers Workshop Here is where the rubber meets the road and we are applying all of our foundational skills. As we learn about different writing styles students are expected to think of a topic, draw their ideas on a specific topic across pages and then write in complete sentences to go with their drawings. Students will have to apply the knowledge of sight words and letter sound formations to help themselves be successful writers. We will be finishing up informational writing right around Spring Break and revisit our small moment narratives as we head into break and return. We will be finishing up informational reading halfway through the month and circle around to reading strategies. Informational reading has taught us different text features and how to talk to others about facts we have learned. Reading strategies will be associated with Beanie Baby friends and a bookmark will be sent home after Spring Break as we have hopefully learned them all. These strategies will allow your students the opportunity to read the words in books more independently when given the prompt or reminder of a strategy if they struggle. Phonological Awareness We continue to work on rhyming. Please be sure to work on rhyming at home as well! This is a great precursor for successful reading in their future. Students should be working on sounding out their words in both reading and writing. Allow them the opportunity to tell you the individual sounds they hear. Have them also work on identifying the first, middle and last sound of a word.
