5 Values for Community Psychology (Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010)
Community Psychology core values (refer to chart): Values for personal well-being Values for relational well-being Values for collective well-being Well-being is viewed as a positive state of affairs brought about by the synergy of all these values, where everyone is committed to working together for their own wellbeing, each other’s well-being and that of communities, society, and the world

6 Personal Well-being Values that serve the needs of the person:
Self-determination or autonomy Caring and compassion Personal health and emotional well-being When people experience these values their personal well-being is enhanced. But for them to enjoy these values, they have to engage in relationships that support them, and live in communities and work in institutions that care about these values.

7 Relational Well-being
Well-being is a relational experience Respect for diversity Participation and collaboration Our happiness intertwined with other people – (connect to ADLER) Respect for a person’s identity is a vital human need What happens if a person’s identity is mirrored back by others and society as demeaning? What happens if this is experienced generationally?

8 Collective Well-being
Distributive justice, or the fair and equitable allocation of bargaining powers, resources and obligations in society is a prime example of collective well-being: Social justice is at the forefront of priorities Support for public institutions and community structures Accountability to the oppressed Social determinants of health – physical, cultural, political, economic and psychological factors combine to promote or decrease personal and collective health. Inequality, lack of access to resources and lack of personal control are conducive to poor health outcomes (Mikkonen & Raphael, 2010)

Well-being comes about in the combination: Collective values Well being Personal values Relational values

10 What’s a Principle? How do we put these values to action? What are the principles that guide us? How are we accountable to Doing Social Interest? “A principle if a statement of fundamental truth. It describes the nature of things as they are, what is basic or essential, what works and what doesn’t, what must be included, and what cannot be left out.” (Bopp & Bopp, 2006, p. 63).

11 Generating Principles
Divide yourselves into three groups: Group 1 – Principles that actualize the values of personal well-being Group 2 – Principles that actualize the values of relational well-being Group 3 – Principles that actualize the values of collective well-being Flip chart for reporting back to the larger group Connect back to the Metaphors generated
