SC Election of 1876 Republican candidate: Daniel Chamberlain
Democratic candidate: Wade Hampton Both Republicans and Democrats used bribes and intimidation during the campaign Wade Hampton won the election but Republicans claimed he won because of bribes and corruption Both Republicans and Democrats claimed victory When federal troops were withdrawn in 1877, Chamberlain did not have any protection and left SC Wade Hampton becomes governor: 1st Democratic gov. since before the Civil War
