2 Apr 1 / Act E 77 Mass and Collisions LEARNING TARGET: I can explain the relationship between mass and force. CH Q Does the mass of an object affect the force it applies during a collision? VOCAB: mass weight

3 mass weight "stuff" / matter that makes up things (does NOT change)
force created by gravity pulling on a mass (on Earth mass and weight just happen to be equal)

4 PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. E and summarize DATA: WS Mass and Collision Write prediction AND procedure

5 Pre-lab control data: Find the speed of an empty cart traveling 50cm down the ramp from release height A. Repeat with 1, 2 & 3 metal cylinders. Design data table on back of data sheet. # cylinders Distance (cm) Time (s) Calculations Speed (cm/s) 100 cm 1 2 3 Next: Do lab following your procedure

6 The object’s mass does NOT affect how fast something falls
POST DISCUSSION Thought… Why did the heavier cart push the block further? Does a heavier mass fall with faster Speed than a lighter one? Explain. The object’s mass does NOT affect how fast something falls (air resistance can) show penny drop, then Apollo, then Crash Course vids

7 What is the relationship between mass, distance and the potential force of the cart?
Hint: Since larger mass does not cause a faster Speed (all trials were at same release height); The longer distance the block moves MUST be because of the mass – not Speed The larger mass has more potential force and causes the block to move a farther distance.

8 ANALYSIS - Discuss and answer Q 1 & 4 on pg. E 20 ANS CH Q Does the mass of an object affect the force it applies during a collision? A: yes, light mass has less force than a heavy mass going the same Speed HOMEWORK Journal AQs Vocab
