Fig 1 Time course of serum creatinine in the experimental groups. Suprarenal aortic clamping (C) induces an increase in serum creatinine levels (*P < .01), which return to normal levels by day 7. With associated hemorrhage (H+C), apart from being more marked (**P < .001), this increase persists at day 7 (P < .05). Exogenous NO administration (groups C+NO and H+C+NO) reduces these increases (†P < .01) except on day 7, both groups behaving in a similar way to the sham group. Note: * and ** vs. sham; † vs C and H+C, respectively. Journal of Vascular Surgery , DOI: ( /j.jvs ) Copyright © 2005 The Society for Vascular Surgery Terms and Conditions

Fig 2 Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in the kidney 72 hours after surgery. Top, A representative Western blot for iNOS. Bottom, mean ± standard error of the mean of five different blots. Groups C (*P < .01) and H+C (**P < .001) show increased iNOS levels with respect to the sham animals, but the values return to normal in the two assay groups (C+NO and H+C+NO) (P = no significance vs sham). In both assay groups, iNOS expression decreases significantly with respect to their respective controls: C (‡P < .01) and H+C (†P < .01). Note: * and ** vs sham; ‡ vs C; † vs H+C. Fig 3 Activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the kidney 48 hours after surgery. Groups C (*P < .05) and H+C (**P < .01) show increased NF-κB levels with respect to the sham animals, and these are normalized in the two assay groups (C+NO and H+C+NO) (P = no significance vs sham). The hemorrhage in the H+C group significantly increases the expression of the factor with respect to clamping alone (§P < .01). Expression is significantly reduced in both the assay groups in comparison with their respective controls C (‡P < .05) and H+C (†P < .01). Note: * and ** vs sham; § and ‡ vs C; † vs H+C.
