1 August 30, 2017 Backpacks on counter in back of room please 
Materials: Pencil, science notebook, Issues in Earth Science book August 30, 2017 Today’s Agenda: Warm-up Analysis question Activity #12 Activity #13 – Diamond Dilemma Notes on properties of minerals Objective: Today we will look at the properties of minerals. Daily Question: What is the difference between transparent and translucent?

2 What is the difference between transparent & translucent?
Transparent allows you to see clearly through an object such as glass. Translucent diffuses light so you can see the shadow of the object such as stained glass or a skylight. Transparent allows you to see an object clearly, translucent diffuses light so the object is seen as a shadow.

3 Daily Question A property is a characteristic or physical quality that helps to identify an object (super heroes…) Question for this answer was: What is a property? Begins for Activity #13

4 Learning Goal: Students will be able to explain the rock cycle, explain the different components and characteristics of each rock type and classify rocks and minerals through observations. ie: grain, texture, color, hardness 4 In addition to 3, I can teach someone else about the rock cycle, the different components and characteristics of each rock type and how to classify rocks and mineral through observations. 3 I can explain the rock cycle, explain the different components and characteristics of each rock type and classify rocks and minerals through observations. ie: grain, texture, color, hardness. 2 I have a basic understanding of the rock cycle, the different components and characteristics of rock types and how to classify rocks and minerals through observations. ie: grain, texture, color, hardness. 1 I have a limited understanding of the rock cycle, the different components and characteristics of rock types and how to classify rocks and minerals through observations. ie: grain, texture, color, hardness. I have no understanding of the rock cycle, the different components and characteristics of rock types and how to classify rocks and minerals through observations. ie: grain, texture, color, hardness.

5 Mineral Property – physical qualities which help to identify an object. Mineral – a mineral is a pure substance 4 properties that helps to identify it: Naturally occurring, inorganic (never alive) Is a solid - example: book, desk, pencil, etc. Definite chemical make-up/composition (H20, NaCl (salt), FeO2 (rust/iron oxide) Crystalline shape (a regular repeating structure)

6 Mineral Has definite physical properties – color, streak, fracture/cleavage, hardness, luster, density, conductivity, crystal form, transparency, etc. Luster – shininess of a mineral – how it reflects light Metallic & non-metallic Crystal shape – octahedron (8 sides), cube ( 6 sides,) rhombehedron (6 sides)tetrahedron (4 sides) Transparent/transparency – ability to transmit light clearly so that an object can be seen distinctly through a substance. (glass, clear water) Translucent – semi-transparent – diffuses light (stained glass, block glass, skylights) Opaque – Not able to transmit light (book, desk, etc)

7 Crystal Shapes cube Octahedron Tetrahedron rhombohedron

8 Mineral Hardness – the ability of an object to scratch another object as directed on the Mohs Hardness Scale Streak – residue left on a ceramic plate after scraping mineral across its surface

9 Mineral Geologist – Scientist who studies rocks and minerals as well as the structure of the Earth. Rock – A naturally occurring solid substance composed of one or more minerals/substances.

10 Activity 13 – Diamond Dilemma
Turn in your textbook to page B-7 Read procedure and complete observations Answer the following analysis questions in your science notebook (questions on the next slide)

11 Analysis questions Answer analysis questions 1-3.
Remember to use complete sentences when you answer the questions. Compare your data with the other pair of students in your group. A) which observations were the same? Which observations were different? Every group received a sample of the same material. Compare your data with the rest of the class. Which observations do you predict will be the most useful in identifying the material? Why? Is the material you observed a diamond? 5-sentence paragraph.

12 Stop here / natural resource ppt for additional vocabulary words on rocks & rock cycle – new ppt with pictures?

13 Minerals & Rocks Rocks are made up of minerals. Sometime the minerals are very small to your sight and various tests must be run to determine the minerals contained in them. Data – Information gathered from an experiment Scientific Method – an orderly, structured manner to perform an experiment
