1 Investigator: B. Lin (bing.lin@nasa.gov)
Integrated satellite global energy data sets for climate analysis and modeling studies Investigator: B. Lin Project status: Year 1 & 2 complete – initial flux estimates and process analysis 0442/19/22/pdf/i pdf 2007GL029768/2007GL pdf Year 3 (now) – focusing on global energy budgets Using GRACE and other water data to cross-check energy balances. inter-comparison of different data sets Year 4&5: focus on long-term climatologies, analyze energy transports of climate systems, test model results Science issue: Global energy budgets will be balanced using combined NASA satellite data sets. Approach: Quantify uncertainties in the integrated global energy data; cross-validate climate energy components using both energy and water cycle satellite observations, and analyze energy and water processes Satellite-based data: HOAPS, CERES, ISCCP, and SRB Models: GLDAS Other data: GPCP2, GRACE, AIRS, MODIS, SSM/I Study Particulars: EOS satellite era ( ), and legend data sets ( ) NEWS linkages: (pull, push, collaborate, external) CERES, ISCCP, SRB, and HOAPS satellite data Rodell – GLDAS & GRACE products Adler – GPCP2 Liu and Wentz – Moisture transports Bosilovich – Model evaluations Schlosser – Water cycle project L'Ecuyer , Olson, Fetzer, Wielicki McFarlane and Dong– Profiles GEWEX LandFlux working group Major Result to go in lower left side: Figures should not be too complex or busy – this example is probably the limit of acceptable complexity. latitude Annual zonal mean atmospheric and surface heat budgets (W/m2) from radiation, latent and sensible heat flux components. Bias errors in the global annual mean data are listed. Updated: October 23, 2007
