EQ: How and when do you use different seam finishes?
A seam finish is any method of sewing or trimming that prevents seam edges from raveling. A seam finish is chosen depending upon the type of fabric and end use of the finished item.

Types of Seam Finishes Zig-zag Fast and easy Use for loosely woven, medium to heavy weight fabrics, i.e. upholstery or corduroy

Pinked finish Doesn’t prevent raveling entirely Use for firmly/tightly woven fabric, not suitable for satin and silky fabrics. Must run a reinforcing stitch between the seam and the pinked edge.

Hemmed finishes Also called Clean or Turned & Stitched Because it is a bulky finish, use on lightweight to medium weight fabrics. Appropriate for unlined garments.

Serged finish Done on a serger. Works well for almost any fabric or application, i.e. unlined garments or window treatments
