Annotation and note taking
2
In your groups: Each person should have two articles and one notes page. You will need a pen or pencil and two colors (marker, colored pencil, or crayon).
3
Who can tell us what it means to annotate?
Annotating Who can tell us what it means to annotate? Before = previewing During = integrating new to old Recall = after each section recall what they said. It forces you to select the main idea THEN Put those thoughts in the margins as you read and only re-read your ANNOTATIONS!!
4
Annotating? Annotation Example What is = Not having material wealth
Write the main idea of the text at the top: Annotation Example = Not having material wealth What is Annotating? Guilt? (Leaving behind others who don’t come from privilege) Interesting thought b/c we expect that all parents want their children to do better than they did.
5
What is a main idea? Central message/all-inclusive or general summary
It’s the answer to “So what about the TOPIC?” “The author thinks that…..” “(S)he’s trying to get across that…..” IT’S ALWAYS A SENTENCE.
6
Watch out for implied main ideas or unstated thoughts.
Pssst. . . You do this all the time! The main idea may be in the details or hints or veiled words someone is saying to you. All writing is someone talking to you.
7
Annotation Directions
As you read the articles you will annotate and then (after), you will take your notes. In one color, try to underline three details that support your claim. In the other color, try to underline at least one detail that opposes your claim (if applicable). You must also write at least five thoughtful comments in the margins of your article: formulate an opinion, make a connection to another source, ask a relevant question, write a reaction, define a difficult vocabulary word, paraphrase or summarize a difficult section of the text. Finally, write the main idea of the article somewhere (at the top or bottom) of the article. Label it as the main idea.
8
Your GRADE will be based on…
EACH person should have FOUR annotated articles (4 x 10 = 40) and FOUR source organizers/notes sheets (4 x 10 = 40) for a TOTAL of 80 points per person. You should get at least TWO of your articles today, but if you can print more, do so. It’s better to get ahead if you can during this project.
