7/27/2019 Astronomy 100/101 Lab #1 Tom Burbine

2 Horizon Where the sky meets the ground

3 To find things in the sky
For a specific time, date, and location, you should know the object’s … Azimuth – angle of the object around the horizon as measured from North Altitude – angle between the object and the horizon Apparent magnitude – brightness in sky

4

5 Altitude is between 0 and 90 degrees
Azimuth Object is North – Azimuth is 0 degrees Object is East – Azimuth is 90 degrees Object is South – Azimuth is 180 degrees Object is West – Azimuth is 270 degrees Altitude is between 0 and 90 degrees

6 Angles in the Sky

7 Apparent Magnitude

8 Stellarium http://www.stellarium.org
First HW assignment (under Assessments) will be using Stellarium and due by Dec. 9 at 11:59 pm

9 Sky Observations that you will Post in Discussions Once a Week in Spark
1) Your location; 2) The time and date you went outside; 3) At least 10 objects (planets, stars) that you expect to see in the night sky for that time and date with each object’s azimuth, altitude, apparent magnitude, and constellation that they are in; 4) Any people that you are with; 5) The weather conditions; 6) If it is clear, name which objects that you actually saw in the night sky.

10 Moon Observations that you will Post in Discussions Once a Week in Spark
1) Your location; 2) The time and date you will go outside; 3) The azimuth and altitude of the Moon; 4) Any people that you are with; 5) The weather conditions; 6) What is the phase of the Moon that you saw.

11 Sunset Observations that you will Post in Discussions Once a Week in Spark
1) Your location; 2) The time and date you went outside; 3) The azimuth of sunset (where the Sun goes below the horizon); 4) Any people that you are with; 5) The weather conditions.

12 Week 1 Observations need to be posted by 9/30 (Friday) at 11:59 pm.

13

14 After you posted 11 observations for each type of observation
You will post what trend you saw for each type of observation by 12/9 at 11:59 pm This grade will not be dropped

15 Today’s Activity We will make skycharts

16 Any Questions?
