Southern Italy Land Agriculture Transport Manufacturing
The Appenine Mts. take over much of southern Italy. 80% of the region is mountainous. Soil cover is thin. Agriculture Mountainous land, poor soil and long dry summers make agriculture difficult. Farms are small and unproductive. Transport Mountainous land has made building roads and railways very expensive. This has discouraged communications, trade and settlement in Southern Italy. Manufacturing A shortage of capital (money), communications and industrial tradition discouraged manufacturing in Southern Italy.
