When we modify a verb we show when it is happening, we say we have conjugated the verb. I walk I walked What has changed?

4 Verbs – the infinitive to walk to be to write

What is it? Shows that the verb is, or was, in progress: it is, or was, continuing. I am running for the bus. I can’t talk now because I am drawing. She was listening to music when the explosion happened.

How to find it? Find the verb (what is the subject doing?) Check to see it is proceeded by the verb ‘to be’. Mina was drawing a picture of the blackbird in the tree. Mina’s drawing of the blackbird slipped from her grasp. Noun Just because the word ends in ‘ing’ doesn’t mean it is a verb – remember to think: what job is the word doing in the sentence?

Shows the verb started in the past and either: Finish in the past Is still continuing in the present Harry has gone to break. Lucy had made a booking at the restaurant. I will have finished the work by two-o’clock.
