1 Unit 4 Vocabulary 1. Coordinate Plane: A plane, also called a coordinate grid or coordinate system, in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at their zero points. 2. X-Axis: The horizontal line on a coordinate plane. 3. Y-Axis: The Vertical line on a Coordinate Plane 4. Quadrant: A quadrant is a quarter of a plane. The x-axis and y-axis divide the x-y plane into four quadrants. The axes themselves are not part of the quadrants.

2 5. Transformation- a function that changes the position or direction of the axis of a coordinate system. (geometric movement) 6. Translation- transformation that slides a figure in the plane without changing its orientation or size. Example: 7. Reflection- a congruence transformation that reflects (flips) a figure over a line called the line of reflection. Examples: 8. Rotation- a congruence transformation that rotates (turns) a figure about a fixed point. 9. Dilation: a transformation that alters the size of a figure but not it’s shape.

3 DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
10. Perspective drawing=How you see things in the real world. What does it look like to you? DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES 11. Top view=view when looking at only the top of a 3-D figure 12. Front view=view when looking at only the front view of a 3-D figure. 13. Side view=view when looking at only the side of a 3-D figure 14. Corresponding vertices=Vertices that are similar in position. Ex: If it is the vertex in the top right corner, it corresponds to the vertex in the top right of the other figure.

4 19. Face= The flat surface of a 3-D figure.
15. Three-Dimensional=figure with a length, width and height. 16. Prism = A three dimensional geometric figure with two parallel, congruent bases that are polygons and lateral faces that are parallelograms or rectangles. 17. Pyramid=A 3-D figure with at least 3 lateral faces that are triangles and only one base. 18. Vertex=The point where the edges of a three dimensional figure intersect. 19. Face= The flat surface of a 3-D figure. Continued on next slide

5 20. Edge= The segment formed by intersecting faces of a 3-D figure.
21. Cylinder= A 3-D figure with two parallel congruent circular bases. 22. Lateral face= one side of a 3-D figure. 23. Base= The top or bottom face of a 3-D figure. 24. Rectangular prism= A solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases that are rectangles. 25. Triangular prism= A prism that has bases that are triangles. 26. Rectangular pyramid= A pyramid with a rectangular base. 27. Triangular pyramid= Pyramid with a triangular base.

6 28. Parallel= not intersecting (railroad tracks)
29. Net= A 2-dimensional figure that can be used to build a 3-D figure. 30. Cube=a solid bounded by six equal squares, the angle between any two adjacent faces being a right angle. 31. Solid=having three dimensions (length, breadth, and thickness), as a geometrical body or figure. 32. Polyhedron: a solid figure having 4 or more faces. 33. Cone= A 3-D figure with a curved surface and a circular base.
