1 2019 VAST-VNSC CEOS Chair initiatives
Committee on Earth Observation Satellites 2019 VAST-VNSC CEOS Chair initiatives 7th LSI-VC meeting, 14 – 15 February, 2019 Vu Anh Tuan, Lam Dao Nguyen, Pham T. Nga Vietnam National Space Center , VAST

2 CEOS Chair 2019 –VAST/VNSC As CEOS Chair 2019, VNSC will ensure continuity of CEOS activities by supporting the following priorities and initiatives of 2018 chair: Land Surface Imaging and its applications through LSI-VC activities including Analysis Ready Data (ARD), CEOS support to GFOI and GEOGLAM, CEOS Open DataCube (CDC) activities, Laying the foundation for an international CO2 and GHG emission monitoring system to make a fundamental contribution to monitoring CO2 and other GHG emissions globally, Following the recommendations on Future Data Access and Analysis Architectures (FDA).

3 Specific Chair Initiative
Regional application of EO data To integrate on-going thematic CEOS activities on a regional basis To demonstrate for key global programs and initiatives (e.g. GFOI, GEOGLAM) how to downscale from global to regional to local applications; Incorporation of different datasets (space-based and in situ) from regional observing systems and inclusion of national and regional users downstream who are not directly part of the CEOS community.

4 Specific Chair Initiative
Focus on the Mekong basin region, which is cross boundary affected by climate change and human activity impacts To enhance contribution and cooperation in the region of the CEOS agencies, To promote the sharing of CEOS agency data by improving access and use of such data in thematic studies and applications for the whole region The Mekong basin regional observatory data are dedicated to thematic studies and applications in relation to forests, agriculture, disasters, climate, carbon, and water. Food scarcity due to population increase and climate changes Dry season precipitation decreased/ minimum flow/ salt intrusion High probability of increased flooding

5 CEOS Chair focus In 2019, CEOS Chair activities will focus on two specific applications: Carbon Observations, including forested regions: to coordinate EO observations to support the effective monitoring and management of the forests in the region, through its Ad Hoc Space Data Coordination group for GFOI, in support of the development of national forest monitoring and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems; Observations for Agriculture: in line with the CEOS Ad Hoc WG on GEOGLAM, and within the GEOGLAM Asia-Rice regional network, a key focus will be addressed on the practical use of CEOS data, especially SAR for rice crop monitoring in Asia.

6 Initiative framework

7 Action plan

8 VNSC initiative and Partners
Data collection: in collaboration with EC (Corpernicus program), JAXA, USGS/NASA… Data Ingestion: in collaboration with SEO, CSIRO, ODC, CNES Forest monitoring: in collaboration with CESBIO/CNES, GFOI, FIPI (Vietnam), MRC Rice monitoring: in collaboration with CESBIO/CNES, GeoRice, MRC Capacity building: in collaboration with WGCapD, SERVIR MEKONG, CESBIO/CNES, related agencies in the region (FIPI, MRC…)

9 Vietnam Data Cube for ARD
1 head node, 1 login node, 7 compute nodes (each: 16 core 2.2GHz, 64GB RAM), 40Gb/s Infiniband Interconnect network Full redundant parallel storage – LustreFS: 195TB, max read/write speed 1.9GB/s Total storage capacity (including work, home, local): ~ 220TB Can be expanded to hundreds of compute nodes, hundreds of TBs of storage 9

10 Ingested ARD Landsat (by USGS) ALOS-2 mosaics (by JAXA)
36453 images (Landsat 4, 5, 7, 8) Time: from 1986 to now ALOS-2 mosaics (by JAXA) 1507 images Time: from November 2016 to April 2018 Sentinel-1: (by ESA) S-1 images (VH and VV polarisation) Time: from January 2015 to September 2018 Swath width: 250 km, pixel size: 10 m x 10 m Constantly update new data  Landsat 7 L1TP (T1) 10 bands pixel_qa; radsat_qa; atmos_opacity; cloud_qa; band1; band2; band3; band4; band5; band7 L1GT (T2)  Landsat 8 pixel_qa; radsat_qa; aerosol; band1; band2; band3; band4; band5; band 6; band7 L1GT (RT)

11 Demonstration - Rice monitoring
Seasonal change of rice cropping by S1 data Map of WS Rice 2017 Map of SA Rice 2017 Map of AW Rice 2017 Map of AW Rice 2017 Map of AW Rice 2018 Annual change of rice cropping by S1 data 11

12 Demonstration - Forest logging map
Forest logging map (by S1) to

13 Mangrove Mapping by Landsat time series data
Mekong Delta Red River Delta By Dr. Richard Lucas and Dr Pete Bunting, Aberystwyth University, UK

14 Interoperation of optical and SAR images
Water detection by Landsat Water detection by ALOS-2 Combined Landsat & Alos-2

15 Ways to complete VNDC Data ingestion (suggested supporters: CSIRO, CNES/CESBIO, JAXA, USGS, EC/ESA) System management and tool development  (IMSG, CNES/SEO/CESBIO) User interface development and maintenance (CEOS, SEO) Capacity building and distribution channels in long term (CEOS WGCapD, CSIRO, CEOS SEO)

16 ARD Lessons learnt from VNDatacube
Lack of preprocessing information provided (input data for atmospheric correction; algorithm) -> requires tools distributed Change of metadata parameters Requiring additional preprocessing for specific applications (rice, water quality) CARD4A used for producing CARD4L? ARD with Cube may help VNSC become data distributor ARD with Cube is supporting the regional approach with different applications ARD are powerful for time-series analyses with consistency 2 products in VNDC: CARD4L-OSR and CARD4L-NRB (SAR) support Interoperability implementation
