Agenda: HW and flash cards must be completed by Friday
Warm Up: What is motion? List five examples of motion that you see in everyday life. What factors help you describe if an object is in motion?
2
What is Motion??
3
Motion Motion is the change of position over time. When describing motion, the answer depends on the position and motion of the person observing you.
4
Position Position describes where an object is. What’s your position in reference to the SmartBoard?
5
I live about 7 miles North West of ARMS.
6
Question Notes 1. What is a reference point? a location (object or places position) to which you compare other locations (or positions)
7
Non example: A flying bird
Ask the students to explain why
8
Example: A sidewalk Why is this a good example?
9
Non example: A moving bus
Why is this a bad example?
10
Non-example: A car at stoplight
What in this picture would show a good example of a reference point
11
Example: A tree
12
They are fixed (they do not move themselves).
Question Notes 2. What characteristic do good reference points have? They are fixed (they do not move themselves).
13
3. Why are reference points important to scientists?
Question Notes 3. Why are reference points important to scientists? They help determine if an object is in motion.
14
Reference Point Do you have any special souvenirs? How do they act like a reference point? How could you use a report card from last year as a reference point? What could you compare it to? How does a yearbook photo serve as a reference point? Position can mean physically, but can also be more abstract, such as 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place. Think of all your past teachers. Is there one that sticks out as reference point of a great teacher who you can compare your current teachers to? What traits made them a great teacher?
15
A reference point is an object or place you use to compare an object or place’s position.
Let’s look at some images of the Charlotte skyline that act as a reference point for different time periods. How does the Charlotte skyline compare between then and now?
16
Charlotte in the 1940s
17
1960s Postcard
18
Charlotte in 1991
19
Charlotte Today vs. 1990s
20
Let’s Debate Which shows motion better? A picture or a movie?
Which shows motion better? The time-lapse video of the Charlotte skyline or the pictures? Motion is a change in position over time. Neither of them show it better. It’s a chance for conversation and the students to discuss how reference point is also used to pin point a specific time to show how things have changed.
21
Are you or are you not moving?
– depends on the reference point..if youre somebody on the ground then it is moving, but if you look at the person next to you still in seat
22
4. What is a reference direction? A direction used to describe motion.
Question Notes 4. What is a reference direction? A direction used to describe motion. North, South, East, West, right, left, up, down, in front of, behind, etc
23
You are skate boarding 15 mph.
The pole on the sidewalk because it’s in a fixed position (not moving). What is the best reference point you can use to determine your motion if you see this?
24
Relative Motion Relative motion is just a way of saying that sometimes different people will say different things about the motion of the same object. This is not because one of them is wrong, but because they are using different frames of reference.
25
Frame of Reference Just as position is described by using a reference point, motion is described by using a frame of reference.
26
You can think of a frame of reference as the location of an observer.
Question Notes 5. What is a frame of reference? You can think of a frame of reference as the location of an observer.
27
Frame of Reference When you are standing on the ground, that is your frame of reference. Anything that you see, watch, or measure will be compared to the reference point of the ground. If I am standing in the back of a moving truck, the truck is now my frame of reference and everything will be measured compared to it.
28
2 minutes to read this paragraph on your paper
2 minutes to read this paragraph on your paper. Then, answer the questions. Frames of reference and relative motion is actually the reason that people get car sick. Your brain is getting two different sets of information about your body's motion that might not exactly agree with each other; information from your eyes, and information from your inner ear. Some people are more sensitive to these differences, which causes them to feel car sick as they watch the road "whiz" by. If you are prone to getting car sickness, try to look forward at a point far in the distance and stay focused on that.
29
Are you or are you not moving?
All depends on frame of reference….if person on the ground is looking up (ground is their reference point), you (in the roller coaster) are in motion….if you are on the roller coaster and the person next to you (reference point) is not in motion because their position (their seat) is not changing
30
Example 1 – THINK, PAIR, SHARE
If you are on the bus, is the bus driver in motion? Hint: Remember what MOTION is…
31
Example 1 If you are on the bus, the driver is not changing his position compared with the inside of the bus. AKA…his position has not changed. He is still in his seat!
32
Example 2 – THINK, PAIR, SHARE
A person is on the sidewalk, and the bus passes her. Is the bus driver in motion?? What about the stop sign that she is standing next to?
33
Example 2 To the observer on the sidewalk, the driver is changing position along with the bus. The street sign is not changing position. From this observer’s point of view, the street sign is not moving, but the driver is.
34
QUICK REVIEW: REFERENCE POINT- a fixed object/place that you use to describe position FRAME OF REFERENCE- location of the observer who may or may not be moving
35
Check Your Understanding – Sit or Stand
You are driving in a car with your friends. In relation to a person standing on the sidewalk, you are (moving/not moving). In relation to the driver of the car you’re in, you are (moving/not moving).
36
Group Practice Partner Read the article, An update on Missing Flight 370: take turns reading each section of the article. After you have finished reading, you must answer the questions in complete sentences.
