1 ADVANCED THERMODYNAMICS 8th semester
ASPen Hysys TUTORIAL ADVANCED THERMODYNAMICS 8th semester

2 Create a list of components Select an appropriate thermodynamic model
BEFORE THE SIMULATION Create a list of components Select an appropriate thermodynamic model

3 Start a new simulation by clicking on “New Case”

4 Modify unit sets Select Tools>Preferences In the menu toolbar
You can change the number of decimal points in the “Formats” tab You can also define independently units for a specific variable

5 Insert appropriate streams (mass or energy)
Preparing the PFD Insert appropriate streams (mass or energy) Insert appropriate units Insert appropriate conditions Temperature Pressure Flow Degrees of Freedom Heater Valve Pump Mixer Heat Exchanger Separator (flash) Distillation Column Absorber Column

6 Define the components from HYSYS databanks
Define an appropriate thermodynamic model to calculate the fluid properties

7 You can define hypothetical components from correlations by inserting specific properties, e.g. Tb, MW.

8 Click “Add” to insert the thermodynamic model

9 The selection of the model depends on the specific process.
If in doubt, you can consult “Methods Assistant”

10 Selection of assumptions
Modify Interaction Parameters

11 Object Palette Material Stream Energy Stream Heater Separator
Compressor Heat Exchanger Expander Pump Valve Mixer Distillation Column Absorber Column Recycle Adjust Set Spreadsheet

12 Material streams

13 Add streams and units From the “Tools” menu in the toolbar, select “Workbook” From menu “Flowsheet” in the toolbar select “Add stream” or “Add operation” Using the Object Palette Alternatively, you can use F11 (to add stream) and F12 (to insert operation).

14 Material stream - definitions
Blue color indicates values defined by user, Black calculated from the models Define compositions by typing in <empty> Define conditions by typing in <empty> Click on “Composition” tab to define composition Double Click on the selected stream You can select the input and output type of composition by selecting the tab “Basis” When all required input is complete the bar turns green Yellow color indicates undefined variables!

15 MATERIAL STREAM - PROPERTIES
You can select the kind of property you want to add depending on the use of interest, eg. Gas The property is now added A list of available properties appears. You can add a specific property by selecting it and then click on the Apply button You can add more properties by clicking on the + button

16 MATERIAL STREAM - Utilities
Click on the “Utilities” tab Click on the “Create…” button to insert “Envelope” utility Click on the attachments tab
