Presentation on theme: "Carbohydrates and the nucleotide ATP"— Presentation transcript:

1 Carbohydrates and the nucleotide ATP
What role do these forms of energy play in cellular function?

2 Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are made of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen only Another name for a carbohydrate is a saccharide Foods like pasta, potatoes, corn, rice, and wheat are rich carbohydrates in human diets Animals break the starches down into simple sugars, providing energy for cells This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC

3 Carbohydrates 2: Carbohydrates also store energy storage in cells
Plants store energy in the starch molecules, while animals store energy in the complex carbohydrate glycogen Plant cell walls are composed of a complex carbohydrate called cellulose, animals are unable to break this down (fiber) This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

4 Carbohydrates 3: Some animals have an exoskeleton made of chitin
Chitin is also a component of the cell wall of some fungi Carbohydrates form part of the molecular backbone of nucleic acids, and they are critical for maintain life This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

5 ATP ATP – Adenosine Triphosphate
ATP is the common energy currency of cells Of all of the energy stored in the bonds of glucose, only 39% of it is transformed to ATP, the rest is lost as heat This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

6 ATP 2: ATP is a nucleotide composed of a nitrogen containing base and a 5 carbon sugar ribose, and three phosphate groups (tri-) ATP is constantly being made in cells from ADP and an inorganic phosphate This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND

7 What do you recognize? What elements/minerals have we discussed in depth, when discussing cellular functions? Why would the developers of Gatorade add these particular elements CER – Watch the video about the development of Gatorade What functions within cells do you think the scientists were focused on? Should they include any other minerals? This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
