Warm-Up 9/18/13 Consider the path taken by a person crossing the river. What color arrows describe the distance of his trip? The displacement?
2
Distance and Displacment
Section 11.1 9/18/13
3
Introduction to Motion
“How fast” depends on your frame of reference We can measure motion relative to some given location (called relative motion)
4
Distance Distance= the length of a path between two points
Can be measured in m, km, cm…
5
Total Distance
6
Then What is Displacement?
7
Displacement Displacement= the direction and distance from the starting point to the ending point along a straight line Ex) 5 blocks North from the bus stop
8
Combining Displacements
Displacements can be added, though we must pay attention to distance and direction Ex) Walking forward 10 steps, then backward 3 means a total displacement of 7 steps
9
Vector vs. Scalar Vectors provide information about direction and distance Ex) 3 meters East Scalars only provide information about distance Ex) 3 meters
