1
Oppression in society
2
What is oppression? prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control.
"a region shattered by oppression and killing" Obviously, this definition is not analytical enough. It should be noted that oppression involves neglecting people's human rights, generations of torture, and cultivating a unstable society. It must be said, that if you are willing to deny human rights to any individual or group, society would not be unjust in relinquishing yours.
3
Types of oppression Self oppression (explain panopticon)

Contemporary oppression
White privilege(Unpacking the invisible knapsack) Male Privilege( Male privilege checklist) Hierarchy of oppressions: *Please draw a image on the board shaun* Intersectionality: ” The Combahee River Collective, a group of black feminists, wrote in their 1977 manifesto (2003, 166) that “we find it difficult to separate race from class from sex oppressions because in our lives they are most often experienced simultaneously,” and black women described (King 1997, 43) their experiences in “dual and systematic discriminations of racism and sexism.” The various struggles cannot be separated or compartmentalized because they mutually construct each other. This multidimensional system of interconnected oppression is known as “intersectionality.”(Melodie Fox) Ruby Bridges, is well known for being the first black child to enter a unsegregated public school. She was born in 1954, and is now only 63.
6
How come oppression is ignored?
The difficulty is seeing oppression, if you are not oppressed. Most people don’t realize, that generally if a large group of people are saying they are oppressed, they actually are. (I.E police brutality, feminist movements) People with power often control the flow of culture.
7
How does oppression affect society?
Oppression has many adverse effects on community, and culture. It creates a rift of “otherization” that can last for centuries, and promotes societal unbalance. In my opinion it would not be unfair to say that all conflict in society is a result of oppression.
8
Is oppression necessary?
There are certain oppressions necessary for the function of society. There are more oppressions that are not necessary for the function of society. We agree to live in society, in exchange for certain freedoms.
