Maya Belize’s colourful history dates back to the time of the Maya Civilization Several major archeological sites within the country is still evident including Cahal Pech, Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha and Xunantunich These Maya cities reflect the advanced civilization as well as a denser population during their domination in Belize English The first recorded European settlement was established by shipwrecked English Seamen in 1638 Belize, formerly British Honduras, was established as part of the British Empire in the 17th century The Famous battle between the settlers known as Baymen and Spaniards was on Sept 10th, 1798 British Honduras earned independence from Great Britain on Sept 21st, 1981 and became known as Belize at that time. Belize has diverse cultures and many amazing world renowned landmarks

6 Belize: The Barrier Reef
It is the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef after Australia's Great Barrier Reef It is the 1st largest living barrier reef in the world It stretches 190 miles from point to point and lies about 25 miles off the mainland Is only half a mile offs of the two most popular cayes: Ambergris Caye & Caye Caulker Named a World Heritage Site in 1996.

7 Belize: The Great Blue Hole
This giant submarine sinkhole is located about 45 miles offshore of Belize It is situated within the Lighthouse Reef Atoll It was made famous by Jacques Cousteau who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths. It is a popular dive/ snorkel site

9 Belize: Home to Central America’s Largest Cave System
There is no exact count of Cave’s span across the Cayes within the country Most caves were used by the ancient Maya as gateways to the “underworld” Many caves that were used as sacrificial chambers still contain artifacts, human remains and carvings Cave Tubing was introduced to the country by Ian Anderson, and is the #1 Adventure activity in Belize. Caving/ Spelunking is ranked at #2

10 Belize: Cave Systems The most famous cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal
(ATM Cave)-Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre It contains seletons, ceramics, & stoneware Most famous remain is "The Crystal Maiden,“ a skeleton of an adolescent (now thought to be a teenage boy), possibly a sacrifice victim, whose bones have been calcified to a sparkling, crystallized appearance The Chiquibul Cave System is one of the largest & best-known cave systems in Central & it includes the largest known underground passages known as the Kabul Sand Passage- discovered in the Western Hemisphere.  It is made up of caves linked by water flows, including the Chiquibul River which flows through Belize & goes underground into the cave system which then resurfaces in Guatemala

11 Belize: Maya Ruins Over 900 Maya ruins in the country. Most of them unexcavated. Xunantunich- “Maiden of the Rock” Is one of the most popular ruins in the country because it is easily accessed for day trips. Caracol- rises 500 meters above sea-level. This Kingdom won major battle over Tikal & is the largest structure in Belize

12 Belize: Rainforest & Jungle
Belize is home to the Worlds' only Jaguar Reserve Over 60% of Belize’s land surface is covered by broad leaf tropical jungle (forest). Many of these forest areas are protected areas by the government & other agencies.

The diverse cultures across Belize allows for a cultural blend of ethnicities! Popular Cultures throughout the country: Creole- Decendants of African slaves & English Baymen Garifuna- Decendants of Arawak Indians & Africans Maya- Both Yucatecan, Mopan & Kekchi groups Chinese- Came to Belize as indentured labourers Lebanese- Came to Belize as indentured labourers East Indians-Came to Belize as indentured labourers Mestizos- Decendants of Native Americans and Spanish Ex-pats- Americans, Canadians & English who choose to live or retire in Belize. Mennonites (Dutch/German farmers- Both Traditional/ conservative & modern/ liberals.
