Microscopic unicellular eukaryotes, sometimes live in colonies Sessile or motile Size and shape vary greatly

Formed by two overlapping valves (like a petri dish) Most live in water, in all types of climates Most are photosynthetic, but some can be heterotrophs Help produce up to 20% of the air we breathe

About ½ of dinoflagellates are photosynthetic

Has symbiotic relationship with coral
