HW Review What is water made of? What does cohesion state?
Negative H ions and positive OH ions Positive H ions and negative OH ions Both of these Neither of these What does cohesion state? Water sticks to other substances Water sticks to water Hydrogen sticks to hydrogen Hydrogen sticks to other substances How does water act in most solutions? It is a universal solute, dissolving mostly ionic or polar covalent substances It is a universal solvent, dissolving mostly ionic or polar covalent substances It is a universal solute, dissolving mostly non-polar covalent substances It is a universal solvent dissolving mostly non-polar covalent substances Describe in terms of atom structure, why elements in the same group have similar chemical properties. Give an example of 4 elements that have similar chemical properties and name the group they are in.
12
The Atom Must know the location, mass, and charge of each subatomic particle. Label on the board for students. Electron = negative charge, outside the nucleus, negligible mass Proton = positive charge, inside the nucleus, and 1 amu Neutron = No charge, inside the nucleus, and 1 amu
13
Atomic Mass, Atomic Number, and the Periodic Table
Atomic Mass (nearest whole #) Atomic Number Format # of neutrons Ions Had students label Atomic, Symbol, and Atomic Mass and made sure they knew that Atomic Number is the smaller number and Atomic Mass is the bigger number. Also point out that mass number and atomic mass are the same thing. Atomic Mass= the number of protons and neutrons Atomic Number = The number of protons Format = (draw the notation with symbol, mass number on top and atomic on bottom) # of neutrons = Atomic Mass – Atomic Number Ions = atoms gain or lose electrons and become charged. *Used silver as an example, and had them point out the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons before moving onto the next slide. Also showed them the ion of Ag+ and how that makes you lose one electron.
14
Examples How many protons, neutrons, and electrons are in a neutral Titanium atom?
15
Examples Write the chemical symbol for Fluorine including its atomic mass and atomic number.
16
Event #1: Shot Put 1. Fill in the chart 2. Fill in the chart
Element Symbol Atomic Number Mass Number Protons Neutrons Electrons Bromine 35 2. Fill in the chart Ion Symbol Atomic Number Mass Number Protons Neutrons Electrons Iodine I-1 127 53 3. Fill in the blanks
17
Event #1: Shot Put 3. Fill in the blanks
18
How the shot put works… You must have gotten EVERY question right to get the shot. For example (On number 1 you had to get a-h correct!) One person from your team lines up WITH THEIR PAPER behind the line before the shot clock expires.
19
Event #2 The Long Jump You cannot go on to the next slip until I have checked your answer. You can correct answers 1 time We will only spend 8 minutes on the long jump. After 8 minutes, the number of questions you answered correctly = the number of points for your team!
20
Event # 3 (400 meters) Timed Event: 10 minutes
Correct Answers = points! Must be working together with your team (DQ’s if not)
21
Exit Slip: Show Your Mastery
80% or above means you’re a master!
22
Exit Slip (110 Hurdles) Timed event: 10 minutes
Questions are in the folder: DO NOT OPEN UNTIL I TELL YOU TO DO SO DO NOT WRITE ON IT! All answers will be recorded on your packet. C A B D E
23
Homework (Due next class)
Complete the extension assignment in your packet Due before the bell rings to begin class
