Preview of This Teaching
The Instructions for Shavuot (Lev 23) What Happened at Sinai (Ex 19) What is the Basis for Relationship between Elohim and his people What is the Purpose for the Laws and Right Rulings
4
Wave Offering "'From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to Yahuwah. From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits to Yahuwah. Vayiqra/Leviticus 23:15-17
5
Offerings on Shavuot Present with this bread seven male lambs, each a year old and without defect, one young bull and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to Yahuwah, together with their grain offerings and drink offerings-- an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to Yahuwah. Then sacrifice one male goat for a sin offering and two lambs, each a year old, for a fellowship offering. The priest is to wave the two lambs before Yahuwah as a wave offering, together with the bread of the firstfruits. They are a set apart offering to Yahuwah for the priest. Vayiqra/Leviticus 23:18-20
6
Set Apart Day On that same day you are to proclaim a set apart assembly (miqra qodesh) and do no regular work. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. Vayiqra/Leviticus 23:21
7
In the Third Month… In the third month after the sons of Yisrael left Mitzrayim-- on the very day-- they came to the Desert of Sinai. After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Yisrael camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Shemot/Exodus 19:1-2
8
Yahuwah to Mosheh Then Mosheh went up to Elohim, and Yahuwah called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Ya'acov and what you are to tell the people of Yisrael: 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Mitzrayim, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Shemot/Exodus 19:3-4
9
The Covenant/Agreement
Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the sons of Yisrael. Shemot/Exodus 19:5-6 Hebrew literally, “if you will surely hear my voice…” - shema is the verb
10
Covenant - Berith The word covenant comes from the Hebrew, tyrIB. (pronounced brēt). The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament describes our word this way: covenant (ASV and RSV); between nations: a treaty, alliance of friendship; between individuals: a pledge or agreement; with obligation between monarch and subjects: a constitution; between God and man: a covenant accompanied by signs, sacrifices, and a solemn oath that sealed the relationship with promises of blessing for keeping the covenant and curses for breaking it.
11
Israel Agrees So Mosheh went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words Yahuwah had commanded him to speak. The people all responded together, "We will do everything Yahuwah has said." So Mosheh brought their answer back to Yahuwah. Shemot/Exodus 19:7-8
12
Yahuwah to Appear Yahuwah said to Mosheh, "I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Mosheh told Yahuwah what the people had said. Shemot/Exodus 19:9
13
Getting Ready And Yahuwah said to Mosheh, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day Yahuwah will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. Shemot/Exodus 19:10-12
14
Getting Ready He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him. Whether man or animal, he shall not be permitted to live.' Only when the ram's horn sounds a long blast may they go up to the mountain.“ After Mosheh had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations." Shemot/Exodus 19:13-15
15
The Third Day On the morning of the third day there was thunder (qol – sounds, voices) and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. Then Mosheh led the people out of the camp to meet with Elohim, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Shemot/Exodus 19:16-17
16
Smoke, Fire and Trumpet Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because Yahuwah descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Mosheh spoke and the voice of Elohim answered him. Shemot/Exodus 19:18-19
17
Yahuwah Descends Yahuwah descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Mosheh to the top of the mountain. So Mosheh went up and Yahuwah said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see Yahuwah and many of them perish. Even the priests, who approach Yahuwah, must consecrate themselves, or Yahuwah will break out against them." Shemot/Exodus 19:20-22
18
Getting Ready Mosheh said to Yahuwah, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.'" Yahuwah replied, "Go down and bring Aharon up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to Yahuwah, or he will break out against them." So Mosheh went down to the people and told them. Shemot/Exodus 19:23-25
19
The Ten Words And Elohim spoke all these words: Shemot/Exodus 20:1 Laws and Right-rulings Laws: Exodus 20:2-17 Right-rulings: Exodus 21:1-23:19
20
The Covenant is the Ten Words
Mosheh was there with Yahuwah forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant-- the Ten Matters (Hebrew, ~yrI)b'D>h; tr<f,Þ[] ). (Shemot [Exodus] 34:28) The Hebrew ~yrI)b'D>h; tr<f,Þ[] means literally, the ten words, or the ten things, or the ten matters.
21
The Ten Words is the Covenant
He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Matters (Hebrew ~yrI+b'D>h; tr<f,Þ[] ), which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. (Devarim [Deuteronomy] 4:13) Yahuwah wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Matters (Hebrew ~yrIêb'D>h; tr<f,Þ[] ) he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And Yahuwah gave them to me. (Devarim [Deuteronomy] 10:4)
22
The Covenant And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant-- the Ten Matters. (Shemot [Exodus] 34:28) He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Matters. (Devarim [Deuteronomy] 4:13)
23
The Terms of the Covenant
“We can have fellowship if you have no other entities that you worship. We can have fellowship if you do not cast objects for yourself to bow down to. We can have fellowship if you do not profane my name. We can have fellowship if you guard my Sabbath day and set it apart.
24
The Terms of the Covenant
“We can have fellowship if you honor your father and your mother. We can have fellowship if you do not murder. We can have fellowship if you do not commit acts of unfaithfulness. We can have fellowship if you do not steal. We can have fellowship if you do not covet your neighbor’s wife. We can have fellowship if you do not covet your neighbor’s possessions.
25
The Covenant in Commandments
As Yahusha started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "Why do you call me good?" Yahusha answered. "No one is good-- except Elohim alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'“ Mark 10:17-19
26
The Basis For Relationship With El
The Covenant is the agreement between Elohim and his people that they will fully obey Him (hear his voice). The Torah and the Prophets teach that the basis for maintaining on good terms with Yahuwah is in the keeping of his Laws and Right-rulings. Obedience then is the key.
27
The Purpose for Laws and Right Rulings
"Speak to the sons of Yisrael and say to them: 'I am Yahuwah your Elohim. You must not do as they do in Mitzrayim, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am Yahuwah your Elohim. Keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them. I am Yahuwah. Vayiqra/Leviticus 18:2-5
28
Guarding His Laws and Right Rulings
But you must keep my decrees and my laws. Leviticus 18:26 "'Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them. I am Yahuwah.'“ Leviticus 19:37
29
What If We Reject His Laws?
"'But if you will not listen (shema) to me and carry out all these commands, and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and drain away your life. Leviticus 26:14-16
30
Consequence for Rejecting
For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees. Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am Yahuwah their Elohim. Leviticus 26:43-44
31
Getting Ready But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Mitzrayim in the sight of the nations to be their Elohim. I am Yahuwah.'" These are the decrees (chukah), the laws (mishpat) and the regulations (torah) that Yahuwah established on Mount Sinai between himself and the sons of Yisrael through Mosheh. Leviticus 26:45-46
32
Obedience to Laws is Life
Hear now, O Yisrael, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that Yahuwah, the Elohim of your fathers, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of Yahuwah your Elohim that I give you. Devarim/Deuteronomy 4:1-2
33
Obedience to Laws is Life
You saw with your own eyes what Yahuwah did at Baal Peor. Yahuwah your Elohim destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, but all of you who held fast to Yahuwah your Elohim are still alive today. See, I have taught you decrees and laws as Yahuwah my Elohim commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Devarim/Deuteronomy 4:3-5
34
Obedience to Laws is Wisdom
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.“ What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way Yahuwah our Elohim is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? Deuteronomy 4:6-8
35
Yahuwah Honors Keeping His Covenant
Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today. If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then Yahuwah your Elohim will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your forefathers. Deuteronomy 7:11-12
36
The Law is Righteousness from Yahuwah
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to Elohim for the sons of Yisrael is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for Elohim, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from Elohim and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to Elohim's righteousness. Romans 10:1-3
37
The Law is Righteousness from Yahuwah
Messiah is the end (goal, target) of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Mosheh describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." Romans 10:4-5
38
The Law is Righteousness from Yahuwah
So the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Messiah down) "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Messiah up from the dead). But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: Romans 10:6-8
39
To Obey… But Samuel replied: "Does Yahuwah delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of Yahuwah? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of Yahuwah, he has rejected you as king.“ 1 Samuel 15:22-23
40
What Do the Prophets Say?
For when I brought your forefathers out of Mitzrayim and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your Elohim and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways I command you, that it may go well with you. Jeremiah 7:22-23
41
What Do the Prophets Say?
Yechezqel/Ezekiel 20:1-25
42
My Take Aways Yes, the Law was given at Sinai The Basis for Relationship is that Elohim is Master and his People will Obey Him Disobedience of the Laws and Right Rulings Breaks the Relationship
