1 Quantify Forces (the numbers)
And you!

2 Forces = masses X acceleration
Newtons = kg x m/s2

3 Example: What Force is required to accelerate a 0
Example: What Force is required to accelerate a kg object at a rate of 2.1 m/s2 ? F = m X a ? = kg X m/s2 F = Newtons of force!!!

4 What force do I apply to the floor if I have a mass of 88 kg?
F = m X a F = kg X m/s2 F = N of force ****** This is my Weight!!! Notice the difference between. Mass and weight 88 kg N Mass is a measure of inertia. Weight depends on the rate of gravitational acceleration!

5 How much force does the egg experience?
Height = 4 m Mass of egg = 53 grams Gravitational acceleration (NOT De-acceleration value) = 9.8 m/s2 Time for egg to come to stop (after fall) = 0.02 seconds (2/100ths of a second) 1) Calculate how fast the egg is falling when it lands (Vf) 2) Calculate the rate of de-acceleration 3) Calculate the Force on the falling egg

6 1). Calculation of Vf of the egg as it falls just prior to impact
Vf2 = VO2 + 2ax VO = 0 Therefore: Vf2 = 2ax. Therefore: Vf. = (9.8)(4) = Vf = m/s

7 2) Calculate the rate of de-acceleration
a = ____V = Vf - Vo = = time t De-acceleration rate = m/s2

8 3) Calculate the Force on the egg
Knowing the mass of the egg and the rate of de-acceleration F = m x a F = kg x m/s2 = F = N of force

9 How many pounds of force is that 23.45 N?
If 1N of force = 0.22 lbs. of force? 23.45 N ( 0.22 lbs.) = lbs of force 1N
