Why are we learning about this?
On Friday 15th March, 50 people were killed and another 50 wounded in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. This was the deadliest attack in the country's history.

World leaders and cities said they stood with New Zealand. Monuments around the world (like the Sydney Opera House) lit up with the silver fern, the symbol of New Zealand.
The public took to social media to express their sadness through messages of support, love and kindness as well as drawings.
Players and fans at the Six Nations rugby observed a moment of silence.

Individual question (1-2 mins)
Before we start, have a quick think about how you would initially react to a tragedy of any sort (natural disaster, famine, terrorism).
When something terrible happens, there are different paths you can take.
Pair activity (4-6 mins)
On the next slide are two paths. Have a look at them, and as a pair decide:

8. The paths we can take in reacting to tragedy*
We can look for someone (an individual or a group) to blame for the tragedy.
We can separate ourselves from that group and point out how they are different.
We can then try and solve the problem by punishing the group or pushing them out.

Across the world, leaders sometimes argue about how to deal with tragedies or attacks.
Social media and the internet has many angry comments about how to deal with attacks or tragedies.
Tragedies in my life or tragedies around me make me nervous about other people. They don’t make me want to get to know others better.

Across New Zealand and around the world, there has been a big effort to support and look after people who were affected by the Christchurch mosque attacks.
I think tragedies bring out the good in people. When tragedy happens, I think people get closer together and learn more about their community.
On social media people have been sending messages of support to the victims of tragedies.
