New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said:
Why are we learning about this? On Friday 15th March, 50 people were killed and another 50 wounded in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. This was the deadliest attack in the country's history. New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: “This can only be described as a terrorist attack. These are people who I would describe as having extremist views, that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and in fact, no place in the world.” Images: 1- References: 1- 2- ©VotesForSchools2019

Individual question (1-2 mins)
The paths we can take in reacting to tragedy Individual question (1-2 mins) Before we start, have a quick think about how you would initially react to a tragedy of any sort (natural disaster, famine, terrorism). When something terrible happens, there are different paths you can take. Pair activity (4-6 mins) On the next slide are two paths. Have a look at them, and as a pair decide: Which is the better response to tragedy? Which response do you think you would have? Which response do you think most people have? Are there any other paths we could take? Tragic event (Natural disaster, famine, war, terrorist attack) Image Sources 1- References ©VotesForSchools2019

The paths we can take in reacting to tragedy*
We can look for someone (an individual or a group) to blame for the tragedy. We can separate ourselves from that group and point out how they are different. We can then try and solve the problem by punishing the group or pushing them out. Path 1 Tragic event (Natural disaster, famine, war, terrorist attack) Path 2 We can focus on helping those who are the most hurt or upset. We can come together and get to know each other and our community better. We can look at how the whole community can make the area safer. Image Sources 1- References *These paths are NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. Nor is there a value judgment on which reactions are better than others. This is merely made to demonstrate that the way we react to tragic events is important. ©VotesForSchools2019

Does tragedy bring people together? No
Across the world, leaders sometimes argue about how to deal with tragedies or attacks. Social media and the internet has many angry comments about how to deal with attacks or tragedies. Tragedies in my life or tragedies around me make me nervous about other people. They don’t make me want to get to know others better. ©VotesForSchools2019

Does tragedy bring people together? Yes
Across New Zealand and around the world, there has been a big effort to support and look after people who were affected by the Christchurch mosque attacks. I think tragedies bring out the good in people. When tragedy happens, I think people get closer together and learn more about their community. On social media people have been sending messages of support to the victims of tragedies. ©VotesForSchools2019
