Aim: What are rocks? Do Now: How are rocks related to minerals?
Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Rock Cycle I. Rocks - are any solid mass of mineral or mineral-like matter that occurs naturally. - The three major types of rocks are: 1) igneous rocks 2) sedimentary rocks 3) metamorphic rocks
3
II. The Rock Cycle - Interactions among Earth’s water, air, and land which cause rocks to change from one type to another.

III. Vocabulary Magma Lava 1. – molten material found beneath the
Earth’s surface. – magma that reaches the surface. Lava

Weathering Erosion Deposition
– a process where rocks are physically and chemically broken down by water, air, and living things. transportation of weathered material. When an agent of erosion (water, wind, ice, or gravity) loses energy and drops the sediments. Erosion Deposition

IV. Energy for the rock cycle
Internal - Processes driven by heat from Earth’s interior are responsible for forming both igneous and metamorphic rocks. - Weathering and the movement of weathered materials are external processes powered by energy from the sun & produce sedimentary rocks. External
