Using the mask or whistle Pep-whistle and pep-mask
It is important that the mask or whistle has complete contact with the face or lips. If you experience coughing during use, pause until finish coughing. Breathe in/out slowly and calmly through whistle/mask Do this _______ times or continue/ 2 minutes Cough/huff powerful a few times to expel the phlegm When hospitalized use the whistle/mask ________ times a day Repeat the procedure until the phlegm has loosened The whistle/mask should be used as long as you experience difficulty breathing Pep-whistle and pep-mask When it’s difficult to breathe, breathing can be eased with the help of a pep-whistle or pep-mask. Pep prevents the small airways from closing and cleans the airways thereby loosening the phlegm. When you inspire through the whistle/mask the air flows freely through the valve and down into the lungs. When you expire the valve closes and forces the air through the resistance plug. This increases the air pressure in the lungs. The increased pressure opens the small airways which improves the air exchange and loosening of the phlegm. Pursed lip breathing It is one of the simplest ways to control shortness of breath. It provides a quick and easy way to slow your pace of breathing, making each breath more effective. 1. Breathe in (inhale) slowly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed. Don't take a deep breath; a normal breath will do. It may help to count to yourself: inhale, one, two. 2. Pucker or "purse" your lips as if you were going to whistle or gently flicker the flame of a candle. 3. Breathe out (exhale) slowly and gently through your pursed lips while counting to four. It may help to count to yourself: exhale, one, two, three, four. Cleaning the PEP-Whistle or PEP-mask The device must be cleaned two or three times a week. It must disassembled before cleaning. All parts can be cleaned using normal dishwashing liquid and a soft brush. Rinse the parts in warm water and dry off. When dry assemble the device. Caution must be taken that the device is assembled correct. The PEP-whistle is yours to keep. The mask must be returned after recovery. If you have questions during your treatment period, you are welcome to contact the physiotherapy department.
