THE DUTCH SETTLEMENT Dutch built a strong wall to protect themselves against the Indians today we call Wall Street The Dutch were the people that found what we call New York New Netherlands--Dutch name for NY New York City called New Amsterdam Divided New Netherlands into “patroonships” Patroonships were vast feudal estates on the Hudson River Dutch bought Manhattan Island from Indians for about $20 dollars worth of trinkets I CAN DESCRIBE THE FOUNDING OF NEW YORK

“Father Wooden Leg” Peter Stuyvesant was the Dutch governor of New Netherlands Nicknamed “Father Wooden Leg” by the Indians Peter Stuyvesant English took over New Netherlands and renamed it New York Dutch left many traditions including Easter eggs, Santa Claus, waffles, bowling, sleighing, skating Duke of York I CAN DESCRIBE THE FOUNDING OF NEW YORK

Founded by William Penn Called “The Holy Experiment” Penn was a Quaker and Pennsylvania to be a refuge for Quakers Quakers also called “The Religious Society of Friends” Quakers started the first antislavery societies Quakers believed in passive resistance King gave William Penn’s family land in America Penn got along with Indians and paid them for land Philadelphia known as “City of Brotherly Love” Planned by William Penn I CAN DESCRIBE THE FOUNDING OF PENNSYLVANIA
