1 Informative Speech A speech designed to convey knowledge and understanding. The audience expects to learn new and useful information.

2 Guidelines for Informative Speaking
Adapt and relate to the audience. Don’t overestimate or underestimate what the audience knows. Use and CITE high quality sources of information. Put the source citation on the PowerPoint slide (Lucas, 2004).

3 Use Effective Delivery Style
Extemporaneous (don’t read). Formal appearance (Use good posture, no headgear, no jackets, no shorts, no flip-flops) Loud volume and clear voice.

4 Effective Visual Aid Engages. Informs. Show as needed.

5 Effective PowerPoint Don’t read (use as speaking points.)
Few points per screen. Talk as you go through the slides. Large font. Simple effects. Use as notes (don’t read).

6 Use Solid Content Teach us something we don’t know.
Use several high quality sources of information and orally cite them. According to an article in Science magazine. . . A Harvard psychologist suggested that. . . To quote a Chinese proverb. . .

7 Use a Variety of Support --information we don’t know--
Story. Statistics. Quotation from an authority. Example. Question. Handout with information. Interactive engagement.

8 Organize Quality Content
Introduction that grabs audience attention and builds your credibility. Body with 2-5 main points, which are supported with information we don’t know. Conclusion that summarizes and makes your message memorable.

9 If needed. . . Turn in revised outline and planning documents at the time of your speech.
