Migration in Costa Rica
National Overview of Migration and Development Immigration Act No. 8764 Migration in Costa Rica 9% of the total national population is born abroad; At least 6% of the national population lives abroad; Close to 2.5 million tourists visit Costa Rica each year; Refuge: The second receiving country of refugees in Latin America; Costa Rica: An increasing diversity, both socially and culturally. Article 3: “This Act promotes integration based on the principles of human life and the cultural diversity of persons, solidarity and human rights.” Article 7: “Migration policy shall be oriented toward the acknowledgment of the multicultural wealth that exists in the country and the development of each person’s potential.” Article 7: Migration policy shall be oriented toward integrating all foreign nationals into economic, scientific, social, labour, education, cultural and sports processes.

Why a social integration policy?

To avoid social, education, and cultural gaps; To enable promoting a fair distribution of the benefits generated though migration; To prevent xenophobia and violence based on the origin of persons; To ensure improved social justice and strengthen the social state of law.
